Call Center provides support during recent snows, fielding more than 4,000 calls

During the state’s recent widespread snow events, the Division’s 1-800-VISITNC Call Center fielded calls from citizens and visitors alike seeking current road conditions and other vital information. Calls to the N.C. Dept. of Transportation’s customer service department were transferred to the Call Center, which maintained 24-hour service throughout the storms and their aftermath. During last week’s winter storms, the Call Center handled more than 2,700 weather-related calls; it fielded more than 1,600 weather-related calls during the storm in late January. The Call Center, located at the N.C. Correctional Institute for Women, is managed by the Division and is staffed by well-trained inmates who live at the facility. The Call Center is a model for interagency cooperation, the result of collaboration between the N.C. Departments of Commerce, Public Safety and Transportation.
