This is a time to recognize those nonhuman friends who add a special dimension to our lives — it’s Be Kind to Animals Week and National Pet Week. While pets are a source of companionship, many dogs provide protection and act as eyes for the blind, as well as helping other disabled owners. Less is expected of cats, who keep humans as household staff. Dogs are found in well over one-third of U.S. homes, cats in slightly less than one-third. Those favoring cats usually have more of them, thus there are 74 million household cats versus about 70 million dogs. Among other companion animals, we have over 8 million birds, 3.3 million rabbits, and 1.1 million lizards. Animal food manufacturing is a $39 billion a year business in the U.S. for some 1,800 establishments. You can find more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at <www.census.gov>.

Well it looks like the atty with the least amount of experience who seemingly used the name recognition from his father being a former District Atty. will now be the DA for the 9th District. Way to go folks as you have proved yourself to be ill informed once again. Mike Waters campaigned that he would work to reduce the DUI offenses that were being pled down or dismissed. The last time I saw him in a Court Room in the area he was representing a habitual dui offender who if convicted was facing prison time…….Is that the way to reduce the DUI levels especially since it was told that Waters wouldn’t defend anyone with a DUI charge. Guess money is everything in the 4-county area…..You have lost a very smart, dedicated, and very professional atty. in Cindy Bostic who has forgotten more about the LAWS that govern the State than this “green atty” who had of all people CJ Dale and Geraldine Champion passing out fliers at the polls soliciting his vote. If that doesn’t tell you a little about his goings on then nothing will. WOW…..can’t believe that the DA’s job was a job that you can get ‘on-the-job-training”……it will have to be b/c this newly elected DA hasn’t ever been in a jury trial…….Imagine that. Good Luck to all of you who have parents that you can ride off there names and use it to better your careers. I would advise you to go out and buy as many guns as permitted by law b/c crime is about to flourish in your area…..Watch and See.
Mrs. Bostic thanks for all your hard work helping the defendants in the area who aren’t priviliged to have the name recognition of others and are afforded opportunities just b/c of who the mom/dad’s are. Good Luck in your future endeavors……JOB WELL DONE.
For Be Kind to Animals Week–and cats keeping humans as household staff–writer must love cats too!
I am sorry Ms. Bostic lost the DA election. She works tirelessly for crime victims and would have been an asset to this area.
In my opinion Vance County needed a prosecutor for DA–now–lets see if the one elected will really put drunk drivers feet to the fire.
I don’t know Mr. Waters or Ms. Bostic, even though I live extremely close to one of them. What I do know, however, is that we, as humans, have to wear different hats in different job professions. Mr. Waters, as a defense attorney, owed due diligence to his clients, even the ones who had obtained DUI tickets. He owed them the legal counsel of defending them in public court, maximizing their potential for victory. This is what our legal system is based upon, fair representation on both sides of the gavel. It is sad that our legal system is set up on loopholes that allow DUI offenders to get off but Mr. Waters was simply wearing the professional “hat” that he was supposed to wear and should not be characterized or judged on that realism. Now that he has a different profession, I’m sure that he will be able to wear a different hat and succeed in performing due diligence for the benefit of our county and our community. As for Ms. Bostic, I’m so sorry that your current profession has come to a halt. I have heard many positive things about you and I certainly wish you well. Our voting system always has a “winner” and a “loser” but that doesn’t mean that either parties are losers.
Opinionated…….he did have a choice to represent the HABITUAL DUI OFFENDER. Look up the facts…even if he had been his court appointed atty. he could have excused himself from the case especially running on the platform that he was running discussing the DUI rate in the area. It was political rhetoric. I’m guessing he won due to name recognition b/c ‘papa bear’ was the DA for years. I say lets wait and see just how much of a benefit he is to the 9th District b/c 8 years out of Law School doesn’t make you qualified for the District Attorney’s Office especially when you have never taken a case to a jury trial. I know the criminal element probably threw a party after the results were announced.
As an afterthought, it says alot about a candidate when they have a habitual tax deadbeat campaigning for them passing out fliers. Way to go……you will get what you deserve at the Court House now. No Justice……No Peace!!! I’ll give it 6 months and the same ones that were passing out fliers for him will be speaking out against him. Watch and See!!!
One issue at a time Decept. Mr. O. Is correct about representing a DUI defendent. Mr. Waters actions were essential for allowing our legal system to work. Somebody’s got to do the dirty work. This kind of experience will help him as a DA, which brings us to your second accusation-the relative inexperince of Mr. Waters in the prosecutor’s office. I agree with you on that point which is why I didn’t vote for him.
As to your afterthought, whatever you say, Decept.
I once heard a defense attorney asked if he would have represented Adolf Hitler, had he had the chance. The defense attorney quickly answered “Yes, and I would have won”. Defense attorneys don’t choose to represent clients with their conscience. Nor should they do so. Defense attorneys defend simply because that is what they are supposed to do. Choosing to “not” represent, because of conscience or personal feeling, is contrary to our legal system setup.
As for his inexperience, I would concur and agree with you Deception. However, I know plenty of experienced veterans in their field that are “sub-par” to say the least. So, maybe a fresh mind will do some good. And maybe not, but time will tell.
Mr.O/Mrs.O: Sorry to inform you but a Defense Atty. can choose not to defend someone who is charged with a crime. It’s not against the law to defer a client to another atty. due to any number of things. If Waters’ was this Habitual DUI Offender’s Public Defender then he could have asked to be removed b/c of he suddenly is concerned about the DUI conviction rate in the 9th District. Stop making excuses……he represented the Drunk(and lost) and those are the facts. That was the 1st and only time Waters’ had ever been involved in a Jury Trial. So give him credit b/c he’s batting 1000. Just wish he wouldn’t talk out of both sides of his mouth on this issue b/c it’s an issue that’s very near & dear to my family. I wish Waters nothing but luck in his new position. I just wish he had stayed away from the political rhetoric that made him out to look like a LIAR.
I guess the local Gun Shops will see an increase in sales in the coming weeks/months b/c the citizens are tired of working and returning home to have it burglarized so I think it’s time to pump some lead in some hind parts and believe me it won’t take long for the CROOKS to get the message!!!!
Deception, your comments are well taken and duly noted. I can see your point, as I hope you can see mine. As for the thieves and crooks in this community, I don’t think Gupton’s can sell enough lead to take care of all of them. It’s so sad to see our community plummet so far down in class and social level.
P.S. I am Mr., not Ms., lol.
Well I saw on the news last night that good ole’ Henderson made another headline with another shooting. I didn’t hear whether or not the guy was killed but I did hear that the white dude shot at 2 males that were alledgedly trying to break into his house. He was quoted on the news as saying he heard a banging on his door at around 9:30-10:00 in the morning while he was sleeping. My question is this…..why did the white dude have a military style assault rifle? News said it was an AR-15 assault rifle. Isn’t that a bit much if your sole purpose of owning a weapon is for self protection?
The white dude that shot at the alledged intruders was once a member of the HiH family of bloggers. He came on this site ranting/raving about how crooked the HPD was and that he was “set up” by a rogue cop that he claims planted drugs on/in his vehicle and pulled him over as he was picking up his child from a local daycare. Not sure what ever became of those charges but if HiH has a way to check the history of bloggers and their posts he posted under the name Jonathan Haith. Lots of HiH bloggers knew his b/c if memory serves me correct he was working at a local cell phone company and was evidently a pretty good salesman. My question is why the Assault Style Rifle and are they even legal to own?
I don’t really like the “white” wording on your post, Deception. I don’t remember this being a racial case. One man shot another man. Whether purple, green, or polk-a-dotted, color should not be put into this conversation, unless color had something to do with the scenario. This “white” man didn’t shoot this intruder because of his color. He shot him because of his intrusion. As for the rifle, I would agree that an AR-15 assault rifle is an odd sleeping partner. I think that as being odd, although I am glad he at least had some sort of weapon to defend himself. It certainly sounds like the intruder deserved the bullet put into his gullet.
On another note, why is there not more activity on this site? I would think more people would voice opinions and comments but there only seems like a handful participate.
I understand the city council received the pay study and the city needs a million and a half to implement it. What will they do now?
Deception, if you’re trying to find the past postings on here about him there is
http://homeinhenderson.com/2009/09/17/news/hpd-makes-heroin-arrest/
and
http://homeinhenderson.com/2010/03/08/news/drug-charges-dropped-against-jonathan-haith/
If you mean comments, if they were made around that same time period they are no longer accessible if they were before we took over the site here.
I should clarify that I don’t know for sure this is the same guy, but the names match.
Deception see if you can answer this(since you ask so many questions):
1. Define an assault rifle?
2. Since when is it illegal to own one?
3. Why are you throwing down the race card again?
4. Why do you like to come on here ever so often and just stir up stuff?
As I said months ago, people on here don’t like you and your post, why to you continue to punish yourself?
One Voice….or Mouth Piece…..if you don’t like the posts…don’t read them. You must be from Henderson b/c you don’t like to hear the Truth. Did I say it was illegal to own an assault rifle? Since when do the normal law abiding citizens of Henderson(your area) sleep with assault rifles under the bed? You stay in your lil’ world and let me take care of mine!!!
You remind me of a line in A Few Good Men…….YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!! Good luck to you in Henderson….hope you don’t need an assault rifle!!!
Also, since when is it considered “throwing the race card” when someone simply states the ethnicity of people? Stupidity crosses all races….even yours!!! Evidently you know the assault rifle toter so maybe you can borrow his if you feel SCURRED tonight!!
Direct quote from WRAL 5 from the shooter…”he missed, and I reckon I connected”!!! Now that’s pure class!! Sleep well residents of Henderson…..nothing like classy citizens!
Deception, the sad part of your comments is that you show your own ignorance in every word. I normally try not to “bite” in my comments, as I feel everyone’s voice is important. However, you only show your own immaturity in your rebuttals, lol. To answer your question, I don’t say “the black president spoke tonight on TV”. I don’t say “the mexican” guy at my work told a funny joke. I don’t say “the white showhost on TV made a great point today”. I choose to respect people of all races and accept them as what they and I all are: (people). We are all the same below the skin so please keep any racist skin thoughts and remarks to yourself. You clearly were trying to stir the “racist pot” by pointing out over and over that the shooter was “white”. I hope you can overcome your racism in your heart. It is such a better world without it.
Mr. Opinionated, any ideas for getting people more involved? I can tell you we have way more readers than those who comment. Just not everyone wants to engage with others for some reason. Many people talk to me personally about things they want to say here but they just don’t want to get involved.
Wait, this homeowner ‘victim’ was previously arrested for dealing heroin, and the investigation dropped due to “in the interest of justice”, does no one else think this case may be more than a random home intruder?
This is, in my opinion, retribution for something…well, attempted retribution.
Anon3 and mingo, when I read the story posted on WRAL’s website I suspected drugs or drug money was a key factor in the invasion. Thank you Anonymous for the link to WRAL.
Mr. Opinionated, I like your handle. Maybe you can lead the charge for additional commentary on any number of topics. Here are a couple of suggestions:
If two-thirds of the parents with students attending Vance County Schools are unable to support a basic need of their children, food, how could they afford $55.00 a month or more for water?
How can people hold elected office when they do not pay their own property taxes (Emron J. Cash owes $3,035.76 and Brenda Peace-Jenkins owes $1,426.53)?
Is there any reason the new million dollar farmers market will be self sustaining unlike the water project?
As for Mr. Deception, if five or more posters dislike his postings they disappear from our collective view.
“My question is this…..why did the white dude have a military style assault rifle? News said it was an AR-15 assault rifle. Isn’t that a bit much if your sole purpose of owning a weapon is for self
protection?”
Deception, the above was cut and pasted from your comment. It is his right as a law abiding American citizen to own such a weapon. You chose to label it as an assault weapon, I call it a firearm. I can choose to call a baseball bat a deadly weapon where you can call it a piece of sports equipment. I enjoy reading your post; it makes me glad to know that people of your character don’t live in this area.
Left Fielder, anon, and Mingo…..it’s nice to know that others on the HiH site can use common sense and read between the lines on issues. I didn’t want to open that can of worms but I thought the same thing.
Left Fielder you make a very valid point in the thread about elected officials who owe back taxes. I’m not sure why the voters in your area continue to elect them other than voter apathy.
Mr. Hart,
My first suggestion would be to start your opening line with “current” topics that should be discussed, instead of historical data. No offense meant by that whatsoever, I just think opening the day with a “hot” topic is better than trying to get people to talk using historical data as an opener.
As for the tax delinquent “leaders” we have in office, there is simply no excuse for that. Our leaders should lead by example. If they can’t or choose not to, they should not be in office. Sadly, we elect them to hold that office in this area, even though they have terrible tax paying histories. I personally think that anyone going for office should be disqualified if they have any tax delinquency history in the last 5 years. If, after being in office, they become delinquent, they should be stripped of office or at least have their taxes immediately garnished out of their check. However, this will never be passed in our law system.
As for Mr. Hart’s comment as to people reading but not voicing their opinions, shame on them. Speaking of history, our forefathers fought and died to give us the voice we have today. Shame on anyone who chooses not to use it.
Mr. Opinionated – I did that when I first started. It took a lot of my time every night to write up current topics for each day. And hardly anyone read them. I don’t have the time for that anymore so I’m not interested in doing that again, unless someone else wants to send me the intro every day for the open lines in which case I’d be happy to use them.
For the period of April 14 to May 14 we have 3,910 unique visitors to our website. Almost 17,000 pageviews. We have a ton of readers, but as with a lot of online communities few actively participate. Ask around in the community and you’ll surely find people that read and have strong opinions on topics discussed here but they choose not to comment online.
I feel that HiH readers are unwilling to share their opinions because of the past legal fiasco when some commentors seemingly crossed the lines of civility. The very minute a person feels attacked, any true communications end. Our society has tolerated the devolution of civility, from top to bottom. The best way to get someone to listen is to resist insulting them.
Deception seems to have ameliorated her screeds a bit. I’ll attempt to do the same. But under the proper conditions, I could roar back like a rabid rabbit.
