30th Annual VGCC Golf Tournament raises Record-Setting Amount

Vance-Granville Community College’s 30th annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament generated approximately $51,000 from entry fees and from sponsors to help fund scholarships for deserving students and support the mission of the college. That result set a new record as the highest-grossing golf tournament in VGCC history, far surpassing the previous record of $35,420, set just last year.

A total of 125 players formed 32 teams to play in either the morning or the afternoon round on May 6, 2014, at Henderson Country Club.

“We greatly appreciate the support of all the golfers and business sponsors who helped us celebrate a three-decade VGCC tradition by making this our most successful tournament ever,” said VGCC President Dr. Stelfanie Williams. “More than $550,000 has been raised by the VGCC golf tournaments since 1985. The generosity of our community partners has helped numerous students achieve their educational goals and will continue benefiting students for years to come.”

Williams also paid tribute to Robert L. “Bob” Hubbard of Henderson, vice-chair of the VGCC Endowment Fund Board of Directors, who has been involved with the golf tournament each year since its inception. After this year’s event, he retired from his role chairing the committee that plans the tournament each year. “Bob Hubbard is a champion for the VGCC Endowment Fund whose passion and leadership have helped grow our golf tournament into the marvelous event that it is today,” President Williams said. At the dinner held to round out the day, Hubbard was presented with a collage of pictures and plaque honoring his service. Also at dinner, student Becky Anderson of Henderson, a recipient of endowed VGCC scholarships, expressed thanks to those who participated in the tournament. Meanwhile, players took home an assortment of door prizes and participated in a silent auction.

In the morning round, the team of Donald Seifert, Sr., Charles Finch, Owen Tharrington and Buddy Thomas took home the first-place trophy. Second place in the morning round went to the team of Bill Mast, Bob Hubbard, Mike Rainey and Bill Barnett, while the team of Lee Newbern, Roger Gouge, Dr. Ken Lewis and Nowell Brooks placed third.

In the afternoon round, the CenturyLink team, which included John Zeigler, Tom Bradley, Steve Launder and Randy Gilmore, finished in first place. The Union Bank/Pegram Insurance Agency team — Ray Pegram, Sr., Ray Pegram, Jr., Thomas Combs and Steven Brame — came in second. Third place in the afternoon went to the Rose Oil team of Chip Watkins, Chick Young, John Stott and Morgan Watkins.

Buddy Thomas took the longest-drive prize in the morning round, while Macy Foster of the Institutional Interiors team had the longest drive in the afternoon. Nowell Brooks won the closest to the pin prize on Hole 11 in the morning, and Bryan Montgomery of the Coca Cola team took that honor in the afternoon round. Steven Brame won the Putting Contest. David Brewster of the Inter Technologies team won the grand prize in the “Beat the Pro” contest: two passes to the U.S. Open.
