The following is a written summation of todays meeting only. This summation focuses on some highs and lows of today’s two hour meeting. An unedited recording of the full two hour …

Vance-Granville Community College hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive on its Main Campus in Vance County on May 28. While the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing program frequently co-sponsors such blood drives, this one was unique because the coordinator was a current student, Tessa Egan of Louisburg. “The blood drive went well,” Egan reported. “We had many appointments scheduled and several walk-ins, which was encouraging to see!” She said that a total of 24 units of blood was donated by …
Friday / Weekend Open Lines
This date 63 years ago was a Wednesday, and it can be assumed that computer technicians and engineers at the Census Bureau were a bit nervous about the day to come. On June 14, 1951, the first commercial computer, UNIVAC I, began its 12 years and 73,000 hours of number crunching for the Bureau. The successful start-up was used to process data from the 1950 Census of Population and launched today’s digital revolution. Now, over three-quarters of America’s approximately 120 …

Zeus tossed a thunderbolt into the local power grid leaving city hall in the dark physically not just figuratively. The Peanut Gallery was abuzz speculating that Zeus was displeased with the elimination of …

Several brightly colored beds of wildflowers are planted along U.S. 52 in Forsyth County at the Rural Hall exit. “Those are beautiful,” said Winston-Salem motorist Carolyn Wright, who had taken the exit. The beds are part of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s wildflower program, which began in 1985, inspired by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson’s efforts to beautify the nation’s highway system and suggested by North Carolina First Lady Dorothy Martin. Don Lee, NCDOT roadside environmental engineer, said the program …
