President Obama Signs Congressman Butterfield’s Bill
President Obama signed H.J. Res 120, a bill Congressman Butterfield introduced to approve the site selected for a memorial that will recognize African Americans who fought for America’s independence during the American Revolution.
The memorial will be a fitting tribute to the heroic actions of tens of thousands of slaves and free African Americans that helped shape the very foundation of this great nation.

50th Anniversary of Vietnam
On Friday, September 19th Congressman Butterfield along with 80 other community organizations joined together to provide a variety of much-needed services to veterans at the Bull City Stand Down in Durham.
As a veteran of the U.S. Army, Congressman Butterfield recognized and honored the sacrifices of all military veterans, and called on local communities and governments to help stem homelessness amongst veterans.

Lecture Series at NCCU on Race & Politics
 Last month, Congressman Butterfield returned to his alma mater to serve as a guest lecturer for a Political Science class at North Carolina Central University. The topic of the discussion was “The Politics of Race and Crime in a Democratic Society.”
During the lecture, Butterfield provided candid advice to the students on the importance of education attainment and the disparity that still exists between blacks and whites even 50 years after the civil rights moment. |

 Butterfield Cheers Appointment of New ECSU Chancellor Stacey Franklin Jones
Congressman Butterfield congratulated Dr. Stacey Franklin Jones on being named the first female Chancellor of Elizabeth City State University. In his statement, Butterfield said, “Dr. Jones credentials and accomplishments are nothing short of exemplary, making her the obvious choice for this position. I am confident that her leadership and vision will help the university grow and thrive during this difficult period.”

Concert for a Cause: Promoting Child Literacy with WE tv and the NAACP
 On Thursday, September 18th Congressman Butterfield greeted students and the surrounding community of Howard University at the “Concert for a Cause: A Night to Support Childhood Literacy.”
WE tv and the NAACP partnered to bring awareness to their childhood literacy campaign through their celebration of talent in music. On behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Butterfield highlighted Howard University’s historic role in educating African Americans and the necessary steps in charting a path forward to increase child literacy.

Remarks at the White House Initiative on HBCU’s Conference
In September, Congressman Butterfield delivered remarks at the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities Conference on “Building and Sustaining Public and Private Partnerships for Future Success in Contracting.”
Congressman Butterfield addressed participants, including college Presidents and White House officials, on the vital role HBCUs play in achieving our national higher education goals. Congressman explained how HBCUs can leverage their uniqueness and diverse student body to establish new partnerships, expand revenue sources, and educate the next generation workforce.
