Attorney General Roy Cooper: Scammers Cash in on Ebola Fears

Scammers are constantly scanning the headlines, looking for a current event they can use to rip off unsuspecting consumers. With the Ebola outbreak in the news, it was only a matter of time before the con artists began using the deadly virus to steal money.

Snake oil salesmen have long pitched all sorts of products to treat the latest disease or cure whatever ails you.  They’re now playing on the fears of people who know that Ebola is a killer, but aren’t aware that there is no approved cure, treatment, or preventative.

Con artists know that fear can sometimes lead to rash decisions, like spending money on fake medicines. If you’ve seen companies or products making claims about treating or preventing Ebola or other diseases, don’t fall for their tricks. Instead, report them to the Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration. If you’ve paid for a phony medication and need help getting your money back, file a complaint with our office or call us at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM toll-free within North Carolina.
