Letitia Fields and Regina Miles are leading their students through unique learning opportunities with the use of their “Walking Classroom” instructional materials at Carver Elementary School.

Fields’ fifth graders and Miles’ fourth graders are among the students who use the miniature disc players and headphones to listen to the audio instruction as they walk around the school’s campus. The “Walking Classroom” was purchased with a $1,600 grant and allows the students to get good, physical exercise while learning in the process.

The materials allow students to simultaneously listen to Common Core content through preloaded portable listening devices while briskly walking for about 30 minutes during each lesson several times a week. Each lesson is tailored to the appropriate grade level and lessons cover curriculum in reading, math and science. The school has enough “Walk Kits” for 30 students.

“We are so pleased with our ‘Walking Classroom,’” Fields said. “The students love the exercise, lessons and getting outside.”
