Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Visiting Fort Bragg

Video of the Week:

This week on a POLITICO panel, “Policy Levers for Boomer Heart Health,” I discussed some of the ways we can address heart health through policy such as the 21st Century Energy and Commerce Cures initiative which expedites the development of life-saving cures and treatments. Weekly Update:
At the start of this week, I led a letter to the Secretaries of two government agencies urging relief for our healthcare providers. The Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) are preparing to issue yet another deadline that will impact physicians, hospitals and other healthcare providers.

These same healthcare providers are still struggling to meet the first two deadlines imposed upon them by these agencies, and facing steep fines for their difficulty in complying. This letter, signed by 115 other members of Congress, urges a delay in releasing the third deadline. Our healthcare providers are desperate for relief and they need additional time to implement technology requirements from the initial two deadlines. Later this week, we took several important votes. On Wednesday I voted against a measure that would have continued funding Planned Parenthood with taxpayer dollars. Thursday of this week, we took up legislation to provide funding for our defense efforts overseas, to fortify our national security and to maintain robust military intelligence.

Politico Boomer Heart Health Panel

On Tuesday, I attended a panel discussion with others in the medical field. We discussed some of the lifestyle changes that need to be made to assist the baby boomer generation, of whom are dealing with a greater degree of chronic health issues.
 On Ft. Bragg This Week

As always, I was thrilled to spend time at Fort Bragg this week. I had the opportunity to speak with GEN Robert B. Abrams of Army Forces Command, Garrison Commander COL Brett T. Funck and U.S. Army Special Operations Command LTG Kenneth Tovo.

It’s important that I hear firsthand from these leaders as to what we can do better in Washington to support our servicemen and women and how I can best assist them. A reoccurring theme in each of these meetings today was how integral Fort Bragg is within the Fayetteville community and to our state as a whole. As the representative of Fort Bragg, I always want to know what I can do personally to help the Fort Bragg community continue to thrive.

During my visit to Ft. Bragg this week, it was a pleasure to meet General Robert B. Abrams (pictured above), Garrison Commander Colonel Brett T. Funck and Lieutenant General Kenneth E. Tovo (pictured below respectively).

Patriot Foundation Dinner

I enjoyed attending the Patriot Foundation’s annual Soldiers Appreciation Dinner in Southern Pines Saturday night where former Fort Bragg commanding general Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson (pictured above) was recognized as its annual Patriot Honoree.

Visiting my Washington Office this Week

It was a pleasure to meet with Camp Corral CEO Mary Beth Hernandez and Retired Army Colonel Kevin McDonnell in my Washington office this week. Camp Corral, which is based in Raleigh, does free week-long summer camps across the country for military children, with priority for families of the wounded, disabled, and fallen.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a great reminder that early detection saves lives. Read about my legislation to protect access to lifesaving screenings, which is called the PALS Act.
