Chef Jeff Harris of Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, is shown as he prepares a curry sauce for Foods II students at Southern Vance High School on November 10.
Harris, who is an instructor in the university’s well known Culinary Arts Program, came to the school to lead sessions during three class periods for the day.
He talked with students about his own experiences, noting that he graduated from high school just five years ago.
During his time in Charlotte, Harris emphasized that he has cooked for several famous people including President Barack Obama four years ago when he attended the Democratic Party’s National Convention, held in the city. He says he also has cooked for several famous NASCAR race drivers, including Jeff Gordon, and for other famous sports figures such as Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Dan Marino.
In each class session, Harris told the students about the varied educational opportunities available at Johnson and Wales. He also stressed that there are opportunities for students to receive scholarships to attend the university, as well as chances for other types of financial aid to help cover college costs.
However, his main focus was to share his experience and helpful tips about cooking and food preparation. As Harris made the curry sauce, he explained to students the importance of preparing all of your food ingredients and the proper care and cleaning of utensils used. He mentioned that curry sauce is full of a blend of spices and he added onions, mushrooms, garlic and ginger for more flavoring. At the end of the cooking exercise, Harris gave all of the students a chance to taste the finished product.
