The Male Mentoring program at Vance-Granville Community College recently installed students to serve as officers and to represent the group at special events.

The new leaders include President Christopher Ford of Manson, a Warren Early College High School/College Transfer student; Vice President Bradley Gooch of Oxford, a student in the Computer Technology Integration – Web Design & Support program; and Recorder/Treasurer Christopher Blue of Henderson, a Vance County Early College High School/College Transfer student.

Ford is at the top of his high school class and is set to graduate with a high school diploma and two associate degrees from VGCC in May. At WECHS, he is an active member of the Beta Club. For VGCC, Ford serves as a peer tutor on both the Main Campus and the Warren County Campus. After graduation, he would like to spend time doing volunteer work before earning degrees in math and physics. His ultimate goal is to teach at a college or university. “The experiences and skills from volunteering and tutoring will help me to help others and make me a better teacher,” Ford said.

Gooch is a graduate of Granville Central High School and is set to graduate from VGCC this year. After completing his degree, Gooch would like to work in the information technology field. He is also a musician and occasionally plays keyboard for his church.

Blue, like Ford, is working toward completing his high school education and two associate degrees at VGCC. After graduating, he plans to transfer to East Carolina University to earn a bachelor’s degree in Public Health/ Pre-Health Professions. Then, Blue plans to enroll in a dental school to study to become a licensed Prosthodontist.

Supported by a grant from the N.C. Community College System, the VGCC Male Mentoring program involves an active, intensive, and engaging process of academic coaching and case management to help male students succeed.
