| North Carolina’s veteran population has grown consistently over the last four years—on average, between 7 and 8 percent a year. Knowing this trend makes it all the more pressing that we continue working to expand veteran-based healthcare facilities here in North Carolina. For this reason, I was so excited to deliver the keynote speech at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Sanford VA Outpatient Clinic on Wednesday.
Just as the VA system has worked to make improvements within North Carolina, Congress has also made significant strides assisting our veterans; such as H.R. 4974 – the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MILCON) appropriations bill that just passed for the next fiscal year. There is still much progress that needs to be made in our VA system, but newly-appropriated Congressional funding, coupled with the completion of this advanced Sanford Outpatient Clinic will go a long way in providing relief to patients and families in the Second District.
Another highlight of this week was enjoying lunch at the Broad Street Deli in Dunn with Miss North Carolina Jr. High, Caroline Marshall. As you can see in the photo above, she sponsored a coloring contest for fourth and fifth graders as part of her anti-bullying platform and was kind enough to present me with a framed photo of the winning entry. Scroll down to see Caroline with some of her young fans as they posed for a picture following lunch!
I hope that you are enjoying a fun and safe Fourth of July weekend as we celebrate our country’s independence! Please do not hesitate to reach out to my office if you need assistance.
