Congressman G. K. Butterfield Newsletter

Heard It First: Gun control takes center stage; Durham mourns the loss of civil rights legend; Butterfield leads call to halt immigration raids; Jobs and Justice Tour concludes
Dear Friend,

Last month, our country suffered a brutal and deadly mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.  The senseless tragedy that claimed 49 lives and injured dozens more has brought the issue of gun control back into focus.

The overwhelming majority of Americans want Congress to take commonsense action to keep guns out of the wrong hands.  Unfortunately, while both sides of the aisle are able to agree that ‘enough is enough,’ parties remain divided over how to respond to the nation’s latest mass shooting.

Congress must act now to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists and criminals. Sensible and bipartisan background check legislation is currently pending before Congress, but Republican leaders refuse to allow members a simple up or down vote.  With 91 Americans killed by gun violence every day, holding moments of silence is not enough. We must take steps now to prevent the next tragedy.

The American people want solutions to our nation’s gun violence epidemic and I was proud to join my colleagues on the House Floor in calling for action.

As always, it is my great honor to serve you in Washington.
Thank you very much.

Very truly yours,

SitInBUTTERFIELD ‘SITS-IN’ TO STAND UP AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE
On June 22, Congressman Butterfield joined in a historic, 26-hour sit-in on the House Floor to demand Republican leadership give a vote on gun violence prevention measures. The sit-in resonated with millions across the country. The clearest takeaway is this: Democrats refuse to be silent–we exercised our right to peacefully assemble–and we did it in support of commonsense gun control.

ImmigrationSPEAKING OUT AGAINST RECENT IMMIGRATION RAIDS IN EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
Butterfield, along with Representatives John Lewis (GA-05), Hank Johnson (GA-04), and Alma Adams (NC-12), spoke out in opposition to recent mass raids and deportations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted under the name Operation Border Guardian taking place in North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina.

The four Representatives sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following the members’ recent meetings with advocates and families who shared their accounts of young students who were detained in their homes or on their way to school.

“These raids have not only had a negative impact on the individuals who have been detained, but they have also created a deep sense of fear within the community and in our schools,” said Butterfield.  “It is my hope that Secretary Jeh Johnson will take a hard look at these operations and the negative impact they are having in communities across the Southeast.”
