Just because you know something to be true, or you heard something from a source you consider to be reliable, or something occurs to you as being true, or it seems reasonable that it could be true, does not make it true in the sense that you can publish it without consequences.
Home in Henderson is not the publisher of your comment posts — you are. You are liable for their content, and you will reap the consequences of what you sow.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, here is a link that defines libel in its various contexts. A quick-and-dirty rule of thumb is this: if you’re not prepared to go to court and prove that its true, it’s libel.
I delete comment posts that I consider to be libelous for several reasons:
1) As a courtesy to the victims,
2) Libelous posts demean the overall quality of the blog, and
3) Libelous posts could tie me up in a legal action, as victims of libel would have to go through me to get to you, costing me the effort of answering a subpoena, giving up your IP address, etc.
As I have written many times before, this is not a free-for-all or a public trust. This is a privately-owned Web site, the use of which is a privilege, not a right. If you cannot or will not conform to the standards set form in the Terms of Use, please take your business elsewhere.
Happy holidays.
