A rumor has been floating around that Home in Henderson will cease operation on March 21, 2008.
So as not to leave you in suspense (in case you skipped the headline like my students often do), it won’t. For better or for worse, HiH will continue into the indefinite future.
In all truth, however, the rumor that has been floating around was more than a rumor. I emailed a few people last week that I was going to call it quits and gave some reasons why.
News travels fast in the electronic age. I should have known that. It was a unique experience, really, to be on the receiving end of a news leak. But it actually turned out to be a good thing, I think, in the end.
Since word got out that I was packing it in, I’ve been fielding telephone calls and emails asking me not to do it. Lots of people. Good people, smart people, people I’ve come to admire and respect.
So many, in fact, that I ended up changing my mind.
What the heck. It’s an editor’s prerogative to change his mind, isn’t it?
These last two-plus years as the editor of this news blog have changed the direction of my life. Upon hearing my name, Hendersonians have gone from saying “What kind of name is that?” to a mixed-inflection “Oh, Home in Henderson!” When I get dirty looks in the supermarket, I don’t know if it’s because I ticked them off as a teacher or as the editor. I’m pretty good at both. (A friend suggested I get a T-shirt: “How have I pissed you off? Check this box…”)
But, on the other hand, I get a lot of compliments, too. At the bank. In the aforementioned supermarket. From coworkers. Even my dad likes the blog. Apparently, a lot of people appreciate having the blog around.
And a lot of people don’t. That hasn’t escaped my attention. This is not the time, however, to argue the relative merits of the thing. I’m sure you’ve already formed your opinion.
You’re reading this, aren’t you?
