White House: Our Dependence on Foreign Oil is Declining
America’s dependence on foreign oil has gone down every single year since President Obama took office. In 2010, we imported less than 50 percent of the oil our nation consumed—the first time that’s happened in 13 years—and the trend continued in 2011. We’re relying less on imported oil for a number of reasons, not least that production is up here in the United States. In fact, America is producing more oil today than at any time in the last eight …

Richard Brand: What Does It Say
I have always had the impression that lawyers, Rabbis, and Conservative Christians had a great respect for the text. Those three people looked carefully at the words that were written in the document. The Lawyers wanted to check the small print of the contract because words matter. Rabbis and Conservative Christians wanted to find and know exact language of the text. What did Moses say? What did Jesus exactly say? Unfortunately, that particular skill set has been abandoned when it …
President Obama Speaks to United Auto Workers
Today, President Obama spoke at the United Auto Workers Annual Conference to discuss the success of the American auto industry. After nearly collapsing three years ago, our nation’s big three automakers are turning profits and opening new factories. The industry has added more than 200,000 jobs. And those workers aren’t just building cars again–they are building better, more fuel efficient automobiles that help Americans save money at the pump every time they fill up. The cars they are building to meet new fuel efficiency standards will average …

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) today sent a letter to United States Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe opposing the proposed closure of the Rocky Mount, North Carolina Mail Processing facility. In his letter, Butterfield wrote that the closure would not only disrupt the livelihood of the 182 employees who work at the facility, but also create a major inconvenience since it services a heavily traveled route. “Closure of the Rocky Mount facility could lead to mail delivery delays, …

Gary Morgan: Pure Foreign Policy
Gary Morgan; Spritual Reflection of an Economic & Political Nature; Pure Foreign Policy The Present: As we review the use and intent of the term “Foreign Policy” by our government, and indeed most if not all the governments of the world, we cannot help but discover that our foreign policy includes and is perhaps even overshadowed by imperialism. Imperialism can be broadly defined as: “One nation’s extension or imposition of power, authority, or influence over another nation’s political and economic …
Department of Public Instruction Results from Pre-K Implementation Studies
The Department of Public Instruction Tuesday released the results of two studies that have found that pre-k programs implemented in public schools perform better than programs in private centers. These analyses of the More at Four program, now NC-PreK, were conducted by the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2009 and 2011. For more than a decade, FPG has acted as the external evaluator for state-funded pre-kindergarten in North Carolina. Given the current draft report …
ID Thieves Stealing Tax Refunds
Some North Carolinians are in for a shock when they try to file their taxes. The IRS tells them that someone has already filed in their name—and has already claimed their refund. Identity thieves are using stolen Social Security Numbers to file the fraudulent returns. Legitimate tax filers usually don’t know that their SSN is being misused until the IRS notifies them about the problem. Our Consumer Protection Division is hearing from as many as 15 North Carolinians per week …

Elissa Yount: Pay Attention Henderson
In the 40 years of living on Chavasse Ave. in the area of the historic Brodie Grove, we have had to go to the city time and time again to protect our residential neighborhood and each time the city re-thought and sided with the city residents who were invested in Henderson. But the fights continue. Presently we are working to see that an ordinance providing for Bed & Breakfasts is written so that the quality of life for our neighborhood …
