RALEIGH — For many, farmers markets are synonymous with summer. But the N.C. Asiatic Soybean Rust was confirmed earlier today on a soybean sample from Cumberland County, NC. Combined with the confirmed finds in Scotland and Cleveland counties, NC, and Suffolk County, VA, essentially all the state’s soybeans are within 100 miles of known rust. Samples received this week from Catawba, Columbus, Gaston, Granville, Hoke, Lincoln, Pasquotank, Robeson, Rutherford, and Wayne counties were all negative for rust. RALEIGH — Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler is encouraging farmers to have their corn tested for aflatoxin to prevent contamination of feeds and food. Aflatoxin is a byproduct of the mold Aspergillus flavus, and can be harmful to both humans and livestock. “Because of our climate in North Carolina, there’s always the potential for aflatoxin to appear,” Troxler said. “Farmers should take advantage of our testing service to protect feed and food against this mold.” Some farmers may need to have …
