On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, members of the Henderson Police Department Special Operations Unit executed a search warrant at 1215 Topleman Street in Henderson. Consumers regularly get messages urging them to renew a magazine or newspaper subscription. But those messages aren’t always sent by the publisher.  For example, some subscribers to the Raleigh News and Observer recently received renewal notices from an “independent subscription agent.”  Some of the prices to renew listed in the notices were much higher than those offered by the newspaper. North Carolinians in the Triad area are receiving startling telephone calls from scammers who claim to have kidnapped the person’s child. In the background of some calls, someone pretending to be the child can be heard pleading for help while being roughed up by the would-be kidnappers. On September 21, 2014 officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 124 N. Bullock Street, Henderson in reference to a suspicious death. Officers found Tisha Hargrove, 46, deceased inside the residence. The investigation is ongoing. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Henderson Police Department with the investigation. An autopsy will be conducted by the North Carolina State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Crooks are using phony invoices to try to trick schools into paying for supplies they never ordered or received. Schools around the country, including one in North Carolina, have reported the scam. The North Carolina school received a real-looking bill for $647.50 from “Scholastic School Supply” in late July. A scammer is trying to use Apple’s iTunes to lure consumers into revealing confidential information. A North Carolina resident reported getting a “Dear Customer” email that Apple had temporarily restricted her iTunes account for security reasons.
