Vance County Schools Testing Begins This Week
Students in Vance County Schools’ elementary and middle schools will be given N.C. end-of-grade tests Tuesday through Thursday of this week, with final exams for the school year administered at local high schools beginning on Friday. At Northern Vance, Southern Vance and Western Vance high schools, testing will begin Friday, May 27, with first-period N.C. end-of-course, N.C. WVHS Students Get Free Home Computers
Western Vance High School has partnered with the Kramden Institute in Durham to provide free desktop computers for all students in the school. Eric Vreeland and Cari DelMariani, both of Kramden, came to Western Vance on May 20 and conducted four different sessions with students and their parents on how to hook up the computers and how to use them once they got them home. Vance County Schools Seniors Apply to VGCC
Seniors at Northern Vance, Southern Vance and Western Vance high schools worked with their school counselors and representatives of Vance-Granville Community College to complete applications online for enrollment at the community college Tuesday, May 10-Thursday, May 12. All seniors participated in the online enrollment process during their English classes. The application process is part of a partnership between Vance County Schools and Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) to have 100 percent of graduating seniors applying for college enrollment. VGCC Practical Nursing graduates receive pins
Vance-Granville Community College honored 22 students who have completed its one-year Practical Nursing program during a pinning ceremony on May 10 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. Vance County Schools Bus Driver Training
Vance County Schools will be hosting school bus driver training sessions Thursday, June 16, Friday, June 17, and Monday, June 20, at L.B. Yancey Elementary School. Interested persons must attend the training on all three days to receive certification. We will only be training individuals to drive school buses. The training sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at approximately 3 p.m. each day. Trustees approve Simulation & Game Development for VGCC
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees brought the Simulation and Game Development curriculum under the college’s Information Technology Program at its bimonthly meeting on Monday, May 16. Trustees approved offering students an associate’s degree in Information Technology with a track in Simulation and Game Development, ending an instructional service agreement VGCC has had with a neighboring community college to jointly provide a similar degree. This summer, 670 of the most distinguished North Carolina rising high school juniors and seniors will explore cutting-edge ideas and concepts in academics and the arts as part of the 2016 Session of the North Carolina Governor’s School. Vance County Schools Teachers Attend Conference
Teachers in Vance County Schools attended a conference designed to train beginning educators April 15-17, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. The conference, entitled “Lighting the Way for Beginning Teachers,” was sponsored by the Collaborative to Support Initially Licensed Professionals. The keynote speakers were N.C. Sen. Erica Smith-Ingram, representing District 3, and N.C. Principal of the Year Steve Lassiter. Reminder of New School Entry at Six Pilot Schools in Vance County
This is a reminder that starting on Monday, May 16, six of our schools will have a new Access Control System in place that will require all visitors during the school day to identify themselves before being allowed into the school. Vance County Schools Honoring Academic Success Event
Vance County Schools hosted its first “Honoring Academic Success” event on the evening of Tuesday, May 10, for students who are among the top 10 percent of graduates in the Class of 2016 from the four local high schools. Approximately 225 people attended the event held in the gallery of McGregor Hall on Breckenridge Street in downtown Henderson. Two VGCC campuses to host Mini-Medical School summer camps
High school students from throughout the region are invited to learn about health sciences and careers in medicine by participating in the 2016 “Mini-Medical School” Summer Camp, conducted by the Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with Vance-Granville Community College. The intensive, week-long day camp is being offered twice: June 13-17, at VGCC’s South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor, and July 11-15, at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus, just outside Louisburg. Vance County Schools Bus Drivers Honored
The top three finishers in the annual Vance County Schools’ Bus Roadeo competition on April 25, were honored by the school system and the Vance County Board of Education Monday night at the board’s meeting. Bostic went on to compete in the district Bus Roadeo held in Raleigh on May 5, and finished sixth in that event. He will compete in the N.C. Bus Roadeo on May 12, at the N.C. State Fairgrounds.
VGCC Culinary students excel at SkillsUSA competition
Vance-Granville Community College students recently earned two first-place awards and a second place in Culinary Arts competitions at the 51st annual SkillsUSA North Carolina State Leadership and Skills Conference. The college’s chapter of SkillsUSA also received recognition with a Top Ten Membership Award. Students and faculty attended the conference in Greensboro on April 19-21. Anthony Visits with NVHS Baseball Team
Donald and Maggie Anthony of Roanoke Rapids, came to Northern Vance High School on May 5 to meet with members of the Vikings baseball team and offer them a face-to-face special thank you. On April 15, Donald Anthony became ill after the Vikings played a game in Chapel Hill. Emergency response personnel had to be called to the scene to take care of Anthony and transport him to a nearby hospital. The Vikings’ players and coaches joined the players and …
