VGCC Student recognized for Academic Excellence
Vance-Granville Community College has named student Elizabeth M. Caulfield of Louisburg as its recipient of the North Carolina Community College System’s Academic Excellence Award for 2016. One student from each of the 58 colleges in the state system is honored with the award each year. Caulfield will be officially recognized at Commencement in May, when she is scheduled to graduate from the college with an Associate in Arts degree. Vance-Granville Community Band presents free Spring Concert April 8th, 2016
The Vance-Granville Community Band will present its annual spring concert on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County. Thomas Jefferson discusses Constitution in second VGCC lecture
History came to life once again at Vance-Granville Community College on March 17, when students, faculty, staff and members of the community enjoyed a visit from Thomas Jefferson, as portrayed by Bill Barker. Clarke Elementary Students Publish Works
Members of the third-grade class of Sara Ireland at Clarke Elementary School have had a book published featuring their writings and illustrations. Ireland’s students studied for a few weeks about outer space and our solar system. She used her students’ studies as the basis for the book entitled, “If I Were An Astronaut That Landed On . . .,” with each student selecting a planet, real or imaginary, they would like to visit. VGCC partnering with WARR on Food Truck Rodeo
The Vance-Granville Community College Mobile Food Truck Entrepreneurship program will participate in a Food Truck Rodeo being held in conjunction with the “Family and Friends Celebration” sponsored by radio station WARR 1520 AM in Warrenton. The National Beta Club chapter at Southern Vance High School has inducted 39 new members into the prestigious, academic organization. Vance County Schools are offering parents a variety of opportunities to register their children for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes for the 2016-2017 school year. Children who will be four years old on or before August 31, 2016, may apply for pre-kindergarten and children who will be five years old on or before the same date should register for kindergarten for next year. Teacher Executive Institute Graduates for 2015-2016
Eighteen local educators have completed their participation in the prestigious Vance County Teacher Executive Institute (TEI) for 2015-2016. They were each honored at the TEI graduation and dinner on March 17, at the Henderson Country Club. A former NFL defensive lineman visited the Main Campus of Vance-Granville Community College on March 16 and spoke to students, faculty and staff about his experiences and the keys to success. Greg Ellis spoke in the VGCC Civic Center for an hour-long presentation that was sponsored by the college’s Male Mentoring Program. New National Junior Honor Society Members
Eaton-Johnson Middle School inducted nine students into the school’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society during a special ceremony held on March 22. Parents and other family members of the students were assembled in the school’s media center for the special recognition of these high academic achievers in the seventh and eighth grades. Dr. Norman Shearin’s Death
Former Vance County Schools Superintendent Dr. Norman Shearin passed away late Tuesday. Visitation is scheduled at 12:00 pm, Friday, March 25th, at the Kure Memorial Lutheran Church followed by the funeral at 1:00 pm. Church address is 117 3rd Avenue, Kure Beach. VGCC students step up to the mic at talent show
More than a dozen Vance-Granville Community College students sang, played instruments, performed magic tricks and demonstrated martial arts on March 4 in “VGCC’s Got Talent,” the first event of its kind for the college. The Male Mentoring Program and the Academic Skills Center at Vance-Granville Community College brought a renowned educator to campus recently to speak to math students and instructors. Dr. Lee Stiff, former president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, presented “Math Matters: Seeing Math for What It Is” on March 10 on VGCC’s Main Campus. VGCC Students awarded Golden LEAF Scholarships
A group of students from Vance-Granville Community College recently received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the North Carolina Community College System. The scholarship program, designed to help North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The scholarship can be used to assist with tuition, books, fees, supplies, transportation and childcare expenses related to attending classes during the 2015-16 academic year, and industry-recognized credential testing expenses that address …
Trustees Approve Budget Requests For County Funding
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees approved a proposed total budget request of $2,786,098 for the 2016-2017 fiscal year for Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties at its bimonthly meeting on Monday, March 21. Registration for classes and orientation sessions for new students have begun for the Summer 2016 term at Vance-Granville Community College, which starts Monday, May 23. Guest speaker at VGCC tells personal stories from civil rights movement

Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of Vance-Granville Community College, announced a major new commitment today (March 21) to eliminate financial barriers to higher education for residents of Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties. President Williams said a new need-based scholarship program, called the “VanGuarantee,” is designed to cover tuition, student fees and textbooks for eligible students whose financial needs are unmet by federal financial aid and other means of support.
