North Carolina Public Schools Title I Distinguished Schools Named
District 7 Elementary School (Cumberland County Schools) and Henderson Collegiate Charter School (Vance County) are North Carolina’s 2015 National Title I Distinguished Schools. Since 1996, North Carolina’s National Title I Distinguished Schools program has recognized two outstanding schools each year. VGCC Trustees celebrate staff-faculty Endowment drive, OK new budget
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees recently celebrated a 22 percent increase in employee contributions to its annual Endowment Fund drive and adopted a budget of $39 million for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. The trustees also welcomed to the board Aleria Perry as the new Student Trustee as members met for their bimonthly meeting on Nov. 16 on the college’s Main Campus between Henderson and Oxford. VGCC Phi Beta Lambda chapter installs new leaders
Vance-Granville Community College’s Chi Beta Chi chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, the business student organization, recently elected officers for the 2015-2016 year. New officers were installed and members were inducted at a ceremony on Nov. 5 on VGCC’s Main Campus. VGCC History Club partners with area historian on oral history project
Students in the History Club at Vance-Granville Community College are working on a unique project that will bring local history to life and preserve it for future generations. Billy Yeargin, a historian who has taught for VGCC in the past and is now a professor of Southern culture at Duke University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, is writing a book on the history of tobacco in the Oxford area and the culture that surrounded the crop. VGCC adds more online courses to VOLT; scholarships available
The new “Vanguard Online Learning through Technology” (VOLT) initiative at Vance-Granville Community College continues to grow, with additional courses set to begin in January. VOLT courses are for adult learners who need an online-only educational experience. The college launched VOLT in August and offered 12 course sections in a variety of subjects. When the spring semester begins on Jan. 11, 2016, the number of course sections will be at least 15. Registration for spring is currently ongoing, and ends on …
Actor, playwright Walter Williamson ’68 to serve as Artist-In-Residence at Louisburg College
Accomplished actor, playwright and author Walter Williamson, a 1968 Louisburg College alumnus whose film credits include appearances in “Mr. Deeds” and “The Longest Yard,” will serve as Artist-In-Residence on campus during the spring 2016 semester. Williamson will serve as a guest lecturer in classes, collaborate with students and faculty, and stage the world premiere of his new play at the college. VGCC registers 350 potential lifesavers
A recent Vance-Granville Community College service project added some 350 people to the registry of potential bone marrow donors. In partnership with the Project Life Movement and the “Save the Fox” campaign, the college held events on each of its four campuses during the week of Oct. 26-29. Students graduate from VGCC Afternoon Tea class as original “Tea Lady” retires
Vance-Granville Community College recently celebrated the graduation of students from the fourteenth edition of a class called “Let’s Have an Afternoon Tea,” while also celebrating the woman who created the unique class. Henderson Middle School Students Receive White House Letter and Photos
Students at Henderson Middle School have received a letter and autographed photos from President Barack Obama. Assistant Principal Nowell Brooks shared the letter and photos with students on November 10. He visited in Dorothy Rahal’s social studies class during the morning and showed them the letter, signed by the President and on official White House stationery. Chef Jeff Harris of Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, is shown as he prepares a curry sauce for Foods II students at Southern Vance High School on November 10. Maria Parham Guild Gift Gallery endows VGCC scholarship in memory of local doctor
Volunteers from the Guild Gift Gallery at Maria Parham Medical Center recently presented a gift of $25,000 to the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund that will create a new scholarship in memory of a Henderson physician, Dr. J. Franklin Mills, who passed away unexpectedly in July at the age of 61. That brings the total to nine such scholarships created by the Guild Gift Gallery since 2008. Oxford Preparatory School Announces Permanent Construction Project
Oxford Preparatory School, a public charter school in Oxford, is pleased to announce plans to construct a permanent facility on the school’s current Landis Road site in Oxford for the 2016 – 2017 school year. Vance-Granville Community College’s first-ever “Fine Arts Day” celebra tion on Oct. 14 featured a wide range of examples of creativity and talent by both students and professionals.
