Vance County Schools – Results from 2014-2015
Data released Wednesday by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction for the 2014-2015 school year is encouraging for the Vance County School System. Eight Vance County Schools increased performance by one letter grade as determined by the state required School Performance grading system. The four-year cohort graduation rate increased by more than four percentage points from the previous school year. Louisburg College to Dedicate Mural During Tar River Festival

New VGCC Scholarship established in memory of Granville County soldier
W. Christopher “Chris” Johnson’s life was devoted to service and helping others, and a new scholarship in his name at Vance-Granville Community College will continue to help local students for years to come. A Granville County native and J.F. Webb High School graduate, Johnson was a 22-year-old private first class in the U.S. Army infantry serving in Iraq in 2007 when he was killed by an improvised explosive device. Robin Wilson is Vance County Schools’ Teacher of the Year
Robin Wilson, a third-grade teacher at New Hope Elementary School, is the 2015-2016 Vance County Schools’ Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Wilson has a total of 41 years of teaching experience, with 30 years of teaching in Virginia. She is in her second year as a faculty member at New Hope after teaching for the previous nine years at E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School. New statewide agreement helps VGCC students transfer to private schools
Vance-Granville Community College students will enjoy clearer pathways to completing a four-year degree, thanks to a new Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA) between the N.C. Community College System and the N.C. Independent Colleges and Universities. On Aug. 27, Dr. R. Scott Ralls, the president of North Carolina’s system of 58 community colleges, and Dr. A. Luncheon Celebration for E.O. Young Jr. Elementary
All staff members at E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School were the special guests during a community appreciation luncheon held in their honor in the fellowship hall of Middleburg Baptist Church on August 20. School staff members enjoyed great food and fellowship with representatives from several churches and the town of Middleburg. The luncheon’s theme was “The Middleburg Diner Presents the Great Showcase Showdown.” Staff members were given door prizes and school supplies for students. Summer Reading at E.O. Young Jr. Elementary
Volunteer Gary Tillotson, shown in photo at right, was one of about 20 church members who tutored students at E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School during a summer reading program led by members of Flat Rock United Methodist Church. Approximately 24 rising second and third-grade students received tutoring each week in the school’s media center from June 23 through August 6. The church provided transportation for the students and also lunch each day they were tutored.
High School students explore health and science at two VGCC campuses
This summer, high school students from across the region attended “Mini-Medical School” camps organized by the Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with Vance-Granville Community College. The camp was held in June at VGCC’s South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor, and in July at the college’s Franklin County Campus, just outside Louisburg. Between the two locations, 35 students completed the program. This was the college’s second summer partnering with Wake AHEC’s Mini-Medical School, which is an intensive, …
VGCC recognizes 15 Medical Assisting students at Pinning
Vance-Granville Community College held a pinning ceremony for its 2015 Medical Assisting program graduates on Aug. 7 at the college’s Franklin County Campus in Louisburg, where the program is conducted. As VGCC’s program is nationally accredited, graduates are now eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ (AAMA) certification examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. VGCC to host Afternoon Tea class
Vance-Granville Community College will offer a course on “afternoon tea,” the tradition that is enjoying a renaissance as fine hotels, inns and tea rooms across the country give guests an opportunity to retreat from the hurried pace of their lives. The course, called “Let’s Have an Afternoon Tea,” will meet on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 until 4 p.m., starting Sept. 29. VGCC Students Awarded Golden LEAF Scholarships
A group of students from Vance-Granville Community College recently received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the North Carolina Community College System. The scholarship program, designed to help North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The scholarship can be used for tuition, books, fees, supplies, transportation and childcare related to attending classes during the 2014-15 academic year, and industry-recognized credential testing expenses that address skill gaps upon …
VGCC offers Fall Mini-Term Classes
Although the Fall 2015 semester at Vance-Granville Community College is well underway, there are actually still opportunities to register for a variety of classes offered during “mini-terms.” These sections start later but end on Dec. 14, at the same time as the full 16-week courses, and they include just as many hours of instruction as under the traditional schedule. Fallen Soldier’s Family creates VGCC Scholarship in his memory
A new scholarship at Vance-Granville Community College will bear the name of a Vance County native who lost his life in combat during the Iraq War. The Lunsford B. Brown II Memorial Academic Achievement Scholarship was recently established by members of his family, including his mother, Deborah F. Brown of Henderson, who chairs the VGCC Board of Trustees. VGCC names new Dean of Warren Campus
Lyndon Hall was recently named Dean of Vance-Granville Community College’s Warren County Campus. In his new leadership role, Hall is responsible for supervising all operations at the satellite campus in Warrenton, including both the curriculum and continuing education courses offered there. A Durham resident, Hall has been a member of the college’s staff since 2009.
