State Board of Education Strengthens its Role in Halifax County Schools to Address Financial, Personnel and Student Placement Decisions
Citing examples of unaddressed recommendations and heightened concern for the students, teachers, principals and staff in Halifax County Schools (HCS), the State Board of Education today sent a letter to the Halifax Board of Education stating that it will take a more direct role in the district’s budget, employment decisions and student course assignment decisions effective immediately. VGCC Names New Director of Student Activities & Athletics
Jeffrey Allen has been named the director of student activities and athletics at Vance-Granville Community College. Allen will oversee clubs, organizations and extracurricular activities that engage students on campus, as well as the college’s intercollegiate athletics program, which includes men’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams. He will also serve as the advisor for the VGCC Student Government Association (SGA). Allen was active in student government when he was an undergraduate, and feels passionately about involving VGCC students in such opportunities. …

Communities Can Strengthen Innovation
The North Carolina Board of Science, Technology and Innovation is a key partner in a new initiative to build and sustain local innovation in communities outside of the Triangle and Charlotte. VGCC Nursing student coordinates Blood Drive
Vance-Granville Community College hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive on its Main Campus in Vance County on July 21. A VGCC Associate Degree Nursing student, Elaine Harrison of Oxford, served as coordinator of the blood drive. Harrison said that she was “very pleased” with the drive, which resulted in the donation of 19 units of blood. A new type of virtual college experience is emerging at Vance-Granville Community College, with the “Vanguard Online Learning through Technology,” or VOLT, initiative. Marking a new chapter in the college’s history of offering distance education, VOLT is now accepting its first students, who will start their courses when VGCC’s fall semester begins on Aug. 17. VGCC offers Administrative Assistant program in one semester
Area residents will have a new opportunity to gain a credential for jobs in office administration when the fall semester begins at Vance-Granville Community College on Aug. 17. The college is scheduling courses in a uniquely accelerated fashion that allows students to complete the entire 17-credit-hour Administrative Assistant certificate in just one semester, all at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg. The Campus Police Department at Vance-Granville Community College recently provided professional development for security officers, including its own. VGCC hosted a two-day, 18-hour North Carolina Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (NCACLEA) Campus Security Training Course for the region.
