Vance County Schools – Secretary Honored at E.O. Young Jr. Elementary
Jodi Pulley, the secretary and receptionist at E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School in Middleburg, was honored on April 22 as one of only 100 school secretaries from the more than 20,000 nominated nationwide to be named a winner of the Secretary Appreciation Sweepstakes through Scholastic Inc. Pulley was presented a bouquet of flowers and showered with words of praise by Marylaura McKoon, principal of E.O. VGCC to offer new Food Truck Entrepreneurship training
Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer a series of courses specifically for entrepreneurs who want to compete in the growing food truck industry. The program is the first of its kind in North Carolina. A partnership of VGCC’s Small Business Center and Personal Enrichment department, the Mobile Food Truck Entrepreneurship Workshop Series will be held at the college’s Franklin County Campus, located on N.C. 56, just west of Louisburg. VGCC offers Workshops on Managing Chronic Health Conditions
Vance-Granville Community College has partnered with the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments to offer a new series of “Living Healthy” workshops this summer. All will be held at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. These programs are being offered to individuals who suffer from chronic health problems, such as diabetes and chronic pain, and their caregivers or significant others. VGCC Students inducted into Honor Society
Vance-Granville Community College recognized 59 students who were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, on April 14 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC students honored with induction into Phi Theta Kappa must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 (3.75 for part-time students) in associate degree curriculum programs and have completed at least 12 credit hours toward their degrees. Vance County Schools – Reading Rewards at Carver Elementary
Students in grades 3-5 at Carver Elementary School who won top honors in the school’s Reading Fair were treated to a limousine ride to the Barnes & Noble bookstore at Triangle Town Center in Raleigh, followed by lunch at The Olive Garden in Wake Forest on April 17. The students won first, second and third place for their respective grade levels in the Reading Fair, which included them illustrating and describing the book they read on a project board. The …
Vance-Granville Community Band presents concert
The Vance-Granville Community Band presented its spring concert on April 16 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Entitled “Music For Everyone,” the program featured selections from a variety of genres by American and European composers. Carl Cantaluppi of Butner, who has played clarinet in the band for many years, spoke on behalf of the ensemble and introduced each piece. VGCC Child Care Center celebrates Reading
The Child Care Center on Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus recently participated in a nationwide initiative to promote reading aloud to young children. March was observed as National Reading Awareness Month. In conjunction with that celebration, the non-profit organization, ReadAloud.org, launched a campaign to promote reading out loud for at least 15 minutes to every pre-kindergarten child, every day. A student in the Paralegal Technology program at Vance-Granville Community College is already making her mark in the legal world. Megan N. Finch of Louisburg is the co-author of the new “Practitioner’s Handbook for Civil Superior Court” for North Carolina’s Division III, an area that includes 11 counties around the Research Triangle region. Vance-Granville Community College recently nominated Adam G. Rooker of Norlina, a student in the Criminal Justice Technology program, for the North Carolina Community College System’s Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. The award was established in 2004 in honor of Scott, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1969-1973, and as President of the N.C. Community College System from 1983-1995. Each year, the N.C. VGCC offers pre-Mother’s Day Hand-Stamped Jewelry class
Vance-Granville Community College will offer a two-hour class that provides opportunities for crafting unique, personalized gifts, just in time for Mother’s Day. The “Hand-Stamped Jewelry” class is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. until noon in room 7107 (Building 7) on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Mother’s Day is May 10.
