NC Continues to Lead Nation in National Board Certified Teachers
North Carolina just added another 527 newly-credentialed teachers to its National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) corps. Although North Carolina placed second behind Washington (946) in 2014 for the total number of newly Board certified teachers, the state continues to lead the nation in its total number of NBCTs at 20,611. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) recently released the latest numbers for states and the nation. VGCC Vice President endows Scholarship
Dr. Angela Ballentine, the vice president of academic and student affairs at Vance-Granville Community College, has established a new scholarship for students at the college where she has served for more than 20 years. Ballentine has named this new scholarship the “Charles and Audrey Ballentine Academic Achievement Scholarship,” in memory of her parents. Students in the National Technical Honor Society and Career and Technical Education classes at Northern Vance High School volunteered to ring the bell and seek donations for needy families through the local Salvation Army during the evening of December 1, at the Walmart Supercenter in Henderson. Vance County Schools – Walking Classroom at Carver Elementary
Letitia Fields and Regina Miles are leading their students through unique learning opportunities with the use of their “Walking Classroom” instructional materials at Carver Elementary School. Fields’ fifth graders and Miles’ fourth graders are among the students who use the miniature disc players and headphones to listen to the audio instruction as they walk around the school’s campus. Dr. Carrie Tulbert, North Carolina’s current Principal of the Year, visited Eaton-Johnson Middle School on November 4, as part of her promise to visit each of the schools of the fellow 2014-2015 regional principals of the year. Dr. Larry Webb, the state’s Region 3 Principal of the Year, welcomed Tulbert to his school. Ribbon cut to open Mechatronics Lab at VGCC South Campus
The Granville County Chamber of Commerce recently held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and open house to celebrate the new Mechatronics lab on Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus, which is located between Creedmoor and Butner. Guest speaker offers life lessons to VGCC students
The Male Mentoring Program at Vance-Granville Community College hosted author, entrepreneur, social activist and educator Dr. NKrumah Lewis as a special guest speaker on Nov. 13 on VGCC’s Main Campus. He shared stories from his own life to offer a message of hope to young people, as he does in his autobiography, “Becoming A Butterfly: From Prison to Ph.D.” Lewis, a Durham native, recounted a childhood in an abusive home, followed by homelessness, a life of crime and incarceration.
