VGCC President back in the Classroom
As president of Vance-Granville Community College, Dr. Stelfanie Williams juggles multiple responsibilities. For the fall 2014 semester, she added another one: teaching a class of 25 College Transfer students. The president recently completed her first stint as an adjunct instructor at VGCC. Williams taught an eight-week, one-credit-hour “College Transfer Success” course on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC Criminal Justice Students complete service projects
Criminal Justice Technology students at Vance-Granville Community College are in training to serve the public, and they recently got a head start with a pair of service projects that involve giving back to their communities. First, students in the Criminal Justice Club continued their longstanding tradition of picking up trash along the whole length of the club’s adopted road, Poplar Creek Road, near the college’s Main Campus on Interstate 85 in Vance County. VGCC to be featured on WRAL-TV
Vance-Granville Community College will be among the subjects of the WRAL “College Road Trip” program, airing on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. On the occasional series, the station spotlights several of North Carolina’s colleges and universities over the course of a half-hour broadcast. State Employees’ Credit Union offers Continuing Education scholarships through VGCC
Vance-Granville Community College is offering 10 scholarships of $750 each to students enrolled in Continuing Education classes through a program funded by the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) of North Carolina. “The SECU is providing these funds to VGCC on behalf of the student to be used for registration fees, books, certification fees and course supplies,” said Dale Fey, dean of Continuing Education at VGCC. “We are so appreciative of the Credit Union for reaching out to help students who …

Vance-Granville Community College has a unique, timely new class coming up that will help area residents become savvy “Black Friday” holiday shoppers. VGCC holds Spring Semester New Student Orientation sessions
The Spring 2015 semester at Vance-Granville Community College begins Monday, Jan. 12, and orientation sessions for new students have already begun. Attending an orientation session is required for all new students who wish to enroll in any of the college’s curriculum programs, and for students who are returning to VGCC after being away for three or more years. Anti-Bullying Rally Scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2014
Vance County Schools is actively participating in the observance of National Anti-Bullying Month during October. Many of our schools are conducting campaigns to prevent bullying and share information with students and parents on the importance of having “bully free” schools. Letitia Fields, a teacher at Carver Elementary School, is now participating in the Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) through N.C. State University in Raleigh. Eaton-Johnson Middle School Students Chosen for N.C. Honors Chorus
Two students at Eaton-Johnson Middle School have been selected to be a part of the 2014 North Carolina Middle School Honors Chorus. Robert and Jackson Hopper, who are brothers, auditioned with over 1,200 students and were two of only 171 students selected to be a part of the statewide chorus. Robert is a seventh grader at Eaton-Johnson and Jackson is in the sixth grade. Robert was ranked sixth out of 20 tenor I’s chosen for the chorus, while Jackson was …
Vance County Schools – Hydro-Stacker at Dabney Elementary
Students at Dabney Elementary School have been enjoying studying plants and flowers that have been growing in small pots or cups included in the school’s new Hydro-Stacker planting and watering system. Their studies have been led by fifth-grade teacher Susan Hughes, who secured a grant from the N.C. Farm Bureau and the Vance County Farm Bureau in the spring to purchase the Hydro-Stacker. The grant was for $750 and was made available through the N.C. Agriculture in the Classroom program. …

NC SAT Scores Show Improvement in 2014
North Carolina’s 2014 seniors posted an average SAT college admission score of 1483, up four points overall from the Class of 2013’s average score, according to the 2014 SAT results released today by The College Board. The national average is 1497 on the Critical Reading, Math and Writing tests that comprise the SAT. North Carolina’s critical reading score (499) surpassed the nation’s reading score (497). The math score in North Carolina was 507 while the nation’s math average was 513. …
