Jenny Waite and Sharon Hopper, both teachers at Zeb Vance Elementary School have been selected to participate in the Governor’s Teacher Network for the next year. N.C. Vance County Schools – Dabney Teacher Receives Grant
Susan Hughes, a fifth-grade teacher at Dabney Elementary School, has received a $750 grant from the N.C. Farm Bureau and the Vance County Farm Bureau. A total of $500 of the grant funding is from the state agency, with the remainder of the money from the county agency. Hughes will use the grant funds to purchase a HydroStacker Vertical Hydroponic Growing System for the use of her students and other students at the school. This is an update concerning the Class of 2014 graduation ceremonies tomorrow at Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools. Due to changing weather conditions and forecasts, both Southern Vance and Northern Vance are planning to hold their graduation ceremonies outside in their football stadiums. Home Care Aide course offered at VGCC Warren Campus
Vance-Granville Community College will offer a Home Care Aide training course at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton, July 7 through Aug. 27. Classes are set to be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Home Care Aide is a relatively new specialty designation created as part of a revision to the state’s Nurse Aide training programs. VGCC Computer classes scheduled for July at Warren Campus
Vance-Granville Community College is currently registering students for two popular computer courses scheduled to be held during the evening at the Warren County Campus in Warrenton. A course on the Microsoft Word and Excel 2010 software is scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., July 7 through July 30. VGCC Nursing student coordinates Blood Drive
Vance-Granville Community College hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive on its Main Campus in Vance County on May 28. While the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing program frequently co-sponsors such blood drives, this one was unique because the coordinator was a current student, Tessa Egan of Louisburg. “The blood drive went well,” Egan reported. “We had many appointments scheduled and several walk-ins, which was encouraging to see!” She said that a total of 24 units of blood was donated by …
Cohort graduates from VGCC Criminal Justice program
An innovative approach recently helped 18 certified law enforcement officers to complete a two-year degree in Criminal Justice Technology in little more than one year. Vance-Granville Community College offered a Criminal Justice “Cohort” program from April 2013 through May 2014. The program was designed with a specific type of student in mind: one who had already completed the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program and was employed by a law enforcement agency. VGCC offers new Medical Coding program
Vance-Granville Community College is introducing a new Medical Coding curriculum certificate program this fall. The program will be scheduled in a uniquely accelerated fashion that allows students to complete the 17-credit-hour certificate over two semesters (August 2014 to May 2015). Six courses are required for the Medical Coding Specialist Certificate: Medical Terminology I and II (OST 141 and 142), Medical Coding, Billing & Insurance (OST 148), Procedure Coding (OST 247), Diagnostic Coding (OST 248) and CPC Certification (OST 249). Paris A. Williamson of Durham, who graduated in May from the Associate Degree Nursing program at Vance-Granville Community College, recently took office as the “Breakthrough to Nursing” Director for the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students (NCANS). Vance County Schools – Top Bus Driver
Fermon Bostick, who has been driving a school bus for Vance County Schools since 1995, won the Vance County Schools’ Bus ROADeo competition for this year and represented the school system in district competition in Nash County. 158 NC Schools to Receive Fresh Produce in 2014-15
Students at 158 elementary schools throughout North Carolina will enjoy more fresh fruits and vegetables during the 2014-2015 school year thanks to a $4 million grant from the USDA Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program (FFVP). VGCC Students conduct successful food drive for kids
The Office Administration Club at Vance-Granville Community College recently conducted a community service project to help local schoolchildren in need. Students participated in the nationwide “BackPack Buddies” movement, which seeks to provide children in low-income households with food for the weekend during the school year. In April and May, the club collected non-perishable food items donated by VGCC students, faculty and staff, along with contributions from Moss Foods of Louisburg.
