VGCC concludes series of workshops for women
Vance-Granville Community College recently completed a project designed to encourage women to complete a two-year degree at the college and then successfully transfer to a four-year university. The third and final installment of a series of workshops called “An Educated Woman, An Educated Future” was held on May 5 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC Makes Significant Progress with Sustainability Efforts
Sustainability efforts at Vance-Granville Community College’s four campuses are making an impact, the VGCC Board of Trustees learned at the regular bimonthly meeting on Monday, May 19. Among North Carolina’s 58 community colleges, VGCC ranked ninth best in energy consumption per full-time-equivalent students and 12th per square footage, Steve Graham, the Vice President of Finance and Operations, told the Board. “From 2007-2008 through 2012-2013, Vance-Granville’s energy consumption per-square-foot decreased by 21 percent and water consumption per-square-foot decreased by 18 percent,” …
VGCC introduces Health Unit Secretary job training course
Vance-Granville Community College is currently registering students for a course providing them with the skills and knowledge to succeed as a Health Unit Secretary. The course, being offered for the first time at the college, is scheduled to be held Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., June 2 through July 24, on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County. VGCC offers PLC course at South Campus
Vance-Granville Community College will offer a course this summer that provides basic instruction in Programmable Logic Controllers. “Introduction to PLC’s” is scheduled to be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m., June 2 through July 31, on VGCC’s South Campus, located between Creedmoor and Butner. A Programmable Logic Controller is a type of computer used for automation of electromechanical processes, such as directing machinery on a factory assembly line. VGCC graduates 11 Law Enforcement Cadets in School’s 98th BLET Class
Eleven cadets graduated on May 13 from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program at Vance-Granville Community College, in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. After passing the state certification exam, all are authorized to work in any law enforcement agency in North Carolina. This class boasted a 100-percent passing rate on the state exam. 30th Annual VGCC Golf Tournament raises Record-Setting Amount
Vance-Granville Community College’s 30th annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament generated approximately $51,000 from entry fees and from sponsors to help fund scholarships for deserving students and support the mission of the college. That result set a new record as the highest-grossing golf tournament in VGCC history, far surpassing the previous record of $35,420, set just last year. Vance County Schools – Pendergrass To Attend N.C. Governor’s School
Christopher Pendergrass, a junior at Northern Vance High School, has been selected to attend the prestigious North Carolina Governor’s School program this summer. He is the only student chosen to attend the five-week residential program from Vance County Schools. Pendergrass has been selected because of his outstanding academics in the area of mathematics. Local Principals Complete Leadership Program
Principals Anne Garrison, Zeb Vance Elementary School, and David Westbrook, G.W. Carver Elementary School recently completed the Distinguished Leadership Program (DLP), a year-long leadership development program for practicing school principals designed and provided by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principal’s Association in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and UNC-LearnNC. VGCC Early Childhood Program earns Renewed Accreditation
The Early Childhood Education program at Vance-Granville Community College recently learned that it is one of 15 associate degree programs to earn the distinction of Accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) this year. This is the VGCC program’s second accreditation, which lasts for seven years. Vance-Granville Community College honored 19 students who have completed the Pharmacy Technology program with a pinning ceremony, held on May 7 in the small auditorium on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC names new Dean of Warren Campus
Mitch Evans was recently named Dean of Vance-Granville Community College’s Warren County Campus. Evans has served in the North Carolina Community College System for 22 years, including almost five years at VGCC. In his new leadership role, Evans is responsible for supervising all operations at the satellite campus in Warrenton, including both the curriculum and continuing education courses offered there.
