Speaker encourages VGCC students to continue education
Vance-Granville Community College kicked off a series of workshops designed to inspire women to accomplish their academic goals on Feb. 24. Approximately 100 women enrolled as students at the college, along with several faculty and staff members, enjoyed the first session, entitled “Follow-Through to Completing a College Degree.” The workshops are part of a Campus Action Project, called “An Educated Woman, An Educated Future,” funded by a grant from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). New VGCC Scholarship created by Triangle North Healthcare Foundation
Students preparing for allied health careers at Vance-Granville Community College have a new resource to help them succeed, thanks to support from a community organization. The Triangle North Healthcare Foundation recently made contributions to the VGCC Endowment Fund that will create a new scholarship. The Triangle North Healthcare Foundation Academic Achievement Award scholarship will be presented to full-time VGCC students who meet certain academic requirements. Character Matters: Stand Up, Speak Out and Stop Bullying Campaign Launches
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), in partnership with Capitol Broadcasting (WRAL/FOX 50), today launched the Character Matters Anti-Bullying Campaign. The goal of this campaign is to bring awareness to the issue of bullying and what schools and communities are doing to stop it. VGCC to Launch New Software for Hiring Process
Later this month, Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) will launch a new robust web-based software solution to automate and streamline the application / hiring process and to improve communications with job applicants. The software, PeopleAdmin, is a leader in talent management solutions for higher education and government employers. More than 700 organizations utilize PeopleAdmin, including many North Carolina community colleges and universities in the UNC System. VGCC Manufacturing training course starts March 3
Vance-Granville Community College is taking another step towards helping displaced workers get back on the job with Certified Production Technician (CPT) training. As part of the North Carolina Back-to-Work program, CPT classes will run March 3 through May 7. Classes will be held Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Summary reports of teacher and administrator (principals/assistant principals) performance for the 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 schools years are available online at www.ncpublicschools.org/effectiveness-model/data. The 2012-13 data also includes ratings for Standard 6 on the teacher evaluation, which uses student growth estimates as a measure of teacher effectiveness. Children enrolled in the Child Care Center on Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus recently enjoyed a visit from Suzanne Cheever, a dental hygienist from the office of Dr. Wilson Hoyle in Henderson. Cheever’s visit on Feb. 5 was planned in conjunction with a unit of study on Dental Health. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Vance-Granville Community College recently welcomed a nationally-known author, innovator and expert in the field of higher education. In January, Dr. Terry O’Banion addressed a convocation of all VGCC faculty and staff, and also offered a break-out session for employees involved in student services and the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan, which deals with academic advising and career planning.
