VGCC Criminal Justice Students conduct food drive
Students in the Criminal Justice Club at Vance-Granville Community College responded to growing concerns about the effects of hunger on local communities by conducting the club’s annual food drive in December. Members collected over 200 pounds of food, filling six large boxes. These donations were distributed to needy families in Granville, Warren and Vance counties. Vance-Granville Community Band kicks off holiday season with free concert
The Vance-Granville Community Band presented its sixth annual free Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 10 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The program was entitled “Christmas Around the World,” and it featured a variety of music representing holiday traditions from several different countries, along with American favorites. Beyond the Trail of Tears: A View from the Cherokee Homeland, is a Summer Institute for K-12 school teachers and eligible graduate students. The Institute is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and hosted by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement in Teaching (NCCAT). NC Again Leads Nation in National Board Certified Teachers
North Carolina added 330 newly-credentialed teachers in 2013 to its National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) cadre. This brings the state’s total number of NBCTs to 20,122, and once again places North Carolina first in the nation in the number of NBCTs. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) this morning released the latest numbers for states and the nation. VGCC offers BioWork training program on two campuses
Classes to train area residents for jobs in the growing biotechnology manufacturing field are scheduled to start in January at both Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg and at the Main Campus in Vance County. Both campuses have state-of-the-art biotechnology labs in which to conduct the “BioWork” Process Technician training course. Seven graduate from EMT-Paramedic training at VGCC
Vance-Granville Community College recently honored two women and five men who completed the college’s 11-month-long Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program in December. Graduates included Dylan Cash and James Poteat, both of Grassy Creek (Granville County); Richard Lovings of Henderson; Melissa Clark of Oxford; Quentin Woody of Watkins (Vance County); and Gavin Frederick and Ruby Wheeler, both of Wilton. Vance-Granville Community College is currently registering students for “Advanced PC Maintenance & Repair.” The course is scheduled to be held on Monday evenings from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m., Jan. 6 through June 30, 2014, in room 7107 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. VGCC offers Commercial Cleaning course
Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer an 11-week Commercial Cleaning training course during the evening at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton. The class will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m., Jan. 6 through March 19, 2014. Instructor Amy Fleming will teach students proper procedures for taking care of a building, including custodial skills, stripping, waxing and floor maintenance. NCDPI Receives 71 Applications to Open Charters in 2015
Nonprofit organizations have submitted 71 applications to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to open a public charter school in August 2015. These applications met the Dec. 6 submission deadline through the automated application system utilized for the first time this year by the NCDPI. More Teachers Leave NC Classrooms in 2012-13
More teachers left their jobs last year according to the 2012-2013 Annual Report on Teachers Leaving the Profession presented today to the State Board of Education at its meeting in Raleigh. According to the statewide report, local school systems had an average teacher turnover rate of 14.33 percent for 2012-13, which is higher than the 2011-12 rate of 12.13 percent. “Although the turnover rate was higher last year, it is reassuring to know that more than a third of the …

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its regular bimonthly meeting on Monday, November 18 at the college’s Franklin County Campus. The evening began with a joint dinner for the VGCC Board of Trustees and the Franklin County Commissioners. Dinner was followed by the regular meeting of the VGCC Board.
