Vance-Granville Community Band seeks Musicians
The all-volunteer Vance-Granville Community Band is looking for new members. Since it was first formed in 2008, the community band has included Vance-Granville Community College students, local high school students, educators, and interested citizens from all four counties of the college’s service area (Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin) and beyond. VGCC presents Glen Raven Awards to Faculty and Staff Members of the Year
At Vance-Granville Community College’s fall convocation in August, President Stelfanie Williams presented the college’s annual awards to a pair of outstanding VGCC employees. Collectively, the honors are known as the Glen Raven Excellence in Teaching and Leadership Awards. Glen Raven, Inc., the manufacturer with a site in Norlina, is a longtime supporter of VGCC. State Board of Education staff have scheduled two public hearings to receive feedback on the High School Accreditation Framework and the NC General Assembly’s Read to Achieve Program. Hargrove named chair of Public Services at VGCC
Steven Hargrove of Henderson, a Criminal Justice Technology instructor at Vance-Granville Community College, was recently promoted to lead a department that includes several of the college’s curriculum programs that train students to serve the public. As Public Services department chair, he now oversees the VGCC Culinary Arts, Cosmetology and Paralegal Technology programs while also serving as head of the Criminal Justice program. Vance-Granville Community College will offer a two-hour class in which participants will learn how to make unique, elegant pieces of jewelry. Several Vance-Granville Community College students recently completed special training for afterschool program administrators and staff members. For the first time, VGCC School-Age Education program head Jacquelin Heath incorporated the “Upping Your Afterschool Game” course content into a curriculum course, School-Age Program Administration (EDU 263), this summer. Eaton-Johnson Middle School, VGCC renew Partnership
Vance-Granville Community College and Eaton-Johnson Middle School in Henderson have formed a renewed partnership, building upon a tradition of collaboration to help prepare young students for higher education. “At Eaton-Johnson, we’re not talking with our kids about whether or not they will graduate from high school,” said Dr. Larry Webb, the middle school’s principal. “Instead, we are expecting them to graduate from high school, and we’re talking to them about where they are going to college.” Webb wants his students …
NCDPI Receives 170 Letters of Intent to Open Charter Schools in 2015
Interested nonprofit organizations have submitted 170 Letters of Intent to apply to open a public charter school in August 2015. The letters were delivered to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction by noon on Sept. 6 and signal that the groups plan to submit a charter proposal to the NCDPI’s Office of Charter Schools by 5 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2013. Gene Purvis retires after 22 Years serving VGCC students
Gene Purvis of Franklinton recently retired as Dean of Student Development at Vance-Granville Community College, after a 32-year career in public education (including 22 years at the college). His VGCC colleagues held a retirement reception in his honor on August 29 at the college’s Main Campus. Purvis first joined VGCC as a vocational counselor in 1991, following 10 years of service as a teacher and counselor in the Granville County Schools system.
