VGCC Practical Nursing Graduates receive pins
Vance-Granville Community College honored 30 students who have completed its one-year Practical Nursing program during a pinning ceremony on Aug. 1 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC to be profiled on UNC-TV
Vance-Granville Community College will take a turn in the statewide spotlight on Thursday, Aug. 22, when UNC-TV airs a segment on the college during its nightly news magazine program, “North Carolina Now.” As part of the N.C. Community College System’s 50th Anniversary celebration this year, UNC-TV has been producing short documentaries on each of the 58 community colleges in the state. State Graduation Rate Continues to Reach Record Heights
North Carolina’s four-year cohort graduation rate continued its upward climb and set another record, according to the state’s 2012-13 Cohort Graduation Rate Report, presented to State Board of Education members today. In 2013, 82.5 percent of students who started ninth grade in 2009-10 completed high school in four years or less. This is up from the 2012 rate of 80.4 percent. Some students require a fifth year of high school in order to complete graduation requirements. The five-year cohort graduation …
VGCC recognizes Medical Assisting students at Pinning
Vance-Granville Community College held a pinning ceremony for its 2013 Medical Assisting program graduates on Aug. 1 at the college’s Franklin County Campus in Louisburg, where the program is conducted. As VGCC’s program is nationally accredited, graduates are now eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ (AAMA) certification examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. Three transferring VGCC Students receive Golden LEAF Scholarships
Recent Vance-Granville Community College students Allison Forsythe of Oxford, Tiffany Gill of Raleigh and Haleigh Meffert of Louisburg have all been awarded Golden LEAF Foundation Scholarships as they continue their education at the four-year level. They are among 215 students from across the state who were selected to receive Golden LEAF scholarships to attend participating in-state colleges or universities this year. VGCC Names 322 to Dean’s List
Vance-Granville Community College has announced that 322 students earned Dean’s List honors for the spring semester that ended in May. To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student had to maintain a 3.5 grade-point average and have no grade lower than “B” while carrying at least 12 semester hours, according to VGCC Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs Dr. Angela Ballentine. Oxford Preparatory High School student orientation/information session August 6th
The next Oxford Preparatory High School student orientation/information session will be held Tuesday 8/6 from 6:00 – 7:00 in the meeting room of the Richard Thornton Library in Oxford. This session is designed to provide detailed information about scheduling, electives, supplies, transportation, and athletics for rising 9th grade students who have already enrolled. OPHS is continuing to enroll students, therefore families of rising 9th graders who are interested but have not yet applied are welcome and encouraged to attend.

VGCC receives Plus 50 Grant
Vance-Granville Community College was recently chosen to join the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, a national effort to train 10,000 baby boomers for new jobs in health care, education and social services. The program is sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges. Brown Takes Oath, College Reaffirmed by SACS
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its regular bimonthly meeting on Monday, July 15 at the college’s Henderson campus. North Carolina Ninth District Court Judge Henry Banks swore in real estate broker Deborah F. Brown of Henderson for a second four-year term on the Board. Brown is also a member of the Vance County Board of Commissioners, and was appointed by that same board. Brown first joined the Board of Trustees in 2009 and will serve though 2017. …

Chris Brockman, an instructor of English and Reading at Vance-Granville Community College, has released a new book of poetry on the ups and downs of aging. The collection is entitled “I Used To Be Old.” Brockman describes his work as “empathetic and accessible poetry that will resonate with anyone who is, has thought about, or is close to someone who is growing older,” adding, “and everyone is growing older every day!” The poems range from fond remembrances to love poems, …
VGCC offers Cosmetology during evening at South Campus
This fall, Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus will offer Cosmetology courses during the evening, making it the only one of the college’s four campuses with such a schedule. In addition, the community colleges in Durham and Wake counties do not offer Cosmetology at night, either, making the program even more unique for the area, according to VGCC Cosmetology program head Tomeka Moss. Kids grow their own food at VGCC Child Care Center
This summer, the young students at the Child Care Center on Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus in Vance County have learned numerous lessons about growing healthy food, following the installation of a raised vegetable garden on their playground. “We’ve planted several varieties of peppers and tomatoes as well as okra, squash, zucchini, rosemary and basil,” said Denise Gill, the child day care center director. “As part of this project, the children have done the planting, watering and harvesting.” Lakeeta Vaughan, …

For the first time, Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer a “boot camp” that students can take to prepare for the VGCC Anatomy & Physiology (or “A&P”) course, just before the fall semester begins. VGCC faculty provide unique opportunities for students at third annual Science Camp
For the third straight year, Vance-Granville Community College held a Science Camp for area middle school students this summer, and this year’s event allowed more students than ever to engage in fun, educational activities related to an even wider range of subjects.
