Kerr Lake Art Show winners named
Entries in the 47th Annual Kerr Lake Art Show, co-sponsored by Vance-Granville Community College and the Kerr Lake Art Society, were judged and put on display for the public on the second floor of Building 7 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County, May 20-31. VGCC Board Reviews Plans to Create a Police Presence on Campus
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, May 20 at the college’s Henderson campus. During that meeting, VGCC Vice President of Employee and Public Relations Stacey Carter-Coley detailed plans for bringing a police force to Main Campus as a way to expand the present campus security and foster partnerships with local law enforcement agencies in the four counties that Vance-Granville serves. VGCC to host Screening of Documentary Film
Vance-Granville Community College will host a screening of “Las Abuelas De Plaza De Mayo and the Search for Identity,” a documentary film, on Wednesday, June 5 at 1 p.m. in the conference room in Building 8 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. North Carolina Public Schools Enter End-of-Year Assessment Period; Test Scores to be Reported in New READY Accountability Model This Fall
Students in grades 3 through high school have begun the assessment period to measure their learning from this school year. This is a well-known routine for public school teachers and students, reaching back to 1993 for end-of-grade assessments and even further for high school end-of-course assessments, but this year, assessments are new to match the new Standard Course of Study that teachers began implementing last fall. Students in grades 3 through 8 will take end-of-grade tests in reading and mathematics. …
VGCC Earth Day festivals feature student projects
Vance-Granville Community College held Earth Day festivals on April 22 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County and South Campus in Granville County. At both locations, students competed with one another to create projects to educate attendees about various environmental issues. Alongside student exhibits were informative displays, works of art and demonstrations related to science, nature and sustainability, provided by college faculty and community members. Vance-Granville Community College celebrated Vanguard student-athletes at its annual Athletics Banquet, held on April 17 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC Director of Student Activities and Athletics Jasmine Hightower served as mistress of ceremonies. School Bus Driver ROADeo on May 21
On Tuesday, May 21st, school bus drivers from across North Carolina will gather at the state fairgrounds in Raleigh to demonstrate their skill and professionalism. The state School Bus Driving Competition (known as the State School Bus ROADeo) will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Martin building. The driving course is set up in the Midway area. Forty-eight school bus drivers will participate in the final testing and driving competition to crown the top school bus driver in North Carolina. …
High School Students study Biotech at VGCC Workshop
Vance-Granville Community College held its first-ever Biotech Workshop for local high school students over the course of two Saturdays, April 20 and April 27. VGCC Bioprocess Technology program head Dr. Danny Monroe and Chemistry/Biology instructor Dr. Tara Hamilton conducted the camp with assistance from lab technician Mark Smith of Henderson, a graduate of the college’s Bioprocess program who is preparing to continue his education at North Carolina Central University. VGCC starting three new Computer classes in June
Vance-Granville Community College is currently registering students for three new computer-related courses that start in June on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. “Accounting Fundamentals” is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m., June 4 through June 27. This course is designed to help non-accountants learn about accounting principles, and it offers a foundation for students expecting to take a QuickBooks course. VGCC’s Early College Students prepare to continue educational journeys
Vance-Granville Community College first began collaborating with local school systems to operate Early College high schools in 2008, allowing local students to simultaneously complete high school diplomas and associate degrees, or almost two years of college-transferable credit. Karyn Dickerson, an English teacher at Grimsley High School (Guilford County Schools) today was named the 2013-14 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year at a luncheon held in Cary. Dickerson succeeds Darcy Grimes, a third grade teacher at Bethel Elementary School (Watauga County Schools). Dr. Tom Houlihan of Oxford, a member of the State Board of Community Colleges, will be the principal commencement speaker for Vance-Granville Community College’s graduation exercises on Friday, May 10. VGCC Students inducted into Honor Society
Vance-Granville Community College recognized 77 students who were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, on April 16 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC students honored with induction into Phi Theta Kappa must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 (3.75 for part-time students) in associate degree curriculum programs and have completed at least 12 credit hours toward their degrees.
