Two Local High Schools Ranked by U.S. News and World Report
According to the U.S. News and World Report magazine’s website (www.usnews.com), Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools rank among the top 73 high schools in North Carolina, based on criteria used by the magazine to review almost 22,000 high schools in 49 states (Nebraska not included). State Board of Education Chairman Bill Harrison: Republican Leader Would Eliminate 5,400 More School Employees
Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger’s opposition to replacing federal “EduJobs” funds set to expire next year would mean the elimination of an additional 5,400 school employees across the state. For the First Time, VGCC to Broadcast Live Video of Graduation Ceremony on College’s Web Site May 11th
Today, Friday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m., Vance-Granville Community College will broadcast a live video feed for VGCC’s 2012 graduation ceremony on the College’s Web site at www.vgcc.edu. This will be the first time that a VGCC graduation ceremony has been streamed live via the Internet. VGCC graduate’s career brings her back to speak to students
A Vance-Granville Community College graduate recently returned to the college’s Franklin County Campus to provide current students with information on domestic violence and related issues. Renale Williams Giles, who graduated from VGCC with an associate degree in Human Services Technology in 2005, now works for Safe Space, Inc. as an advocate for children and victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. VGCC students attend statewide WIA Youth Summit
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program at Vance-Granville Community College recently sponsored two of its youth participants to attend the sixth annual North Carolina Youth Summit at The Embassy Suites in Greensboro. The NC Youth Summit is a two-day statewide conference for youth enrolled in WIA programs. The Summit was developed so that young adults could come together to evaluate and address critical statewide youth issues, identify commonalities, share best practices, and develop value-added solutions. Jessica B. Cheek of Oxford, a Culinary Arts student at Vance-Granville Community College, recently won an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2012 National Restaurant Association Show, held May 5-8 in Chicago. Cheek entered a contest on web site of the culinary apparel provider, ChefUniforms.com, in which culinary students and professionals from across the country submitted their name, photo, and an essay on why they deserved to win the free trip. Northern Vance PTO Sponsoring Show “Hopelessly Devoted To You”

Vance County Schools Seeking Volunteers for End of Grade Test Help
Eaton-Johnson Middle School and Henderson Middle School are in desperate need of test proctors for next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (May 15-17). The proctors (volunteers) would be needed to monitor students during state end-of-grade testing from 8 a.m. to about 11 a.m. each day. It is that simple – you’d just watch the kids during testing. Darcy Grimes, a third grade teacher at Bethel Elementary School (Watauga County Schools) today was named the 2012-13 North Carolina Teacher of the Year at a luncheon held in Cary. Grimes succeeds Tyronna Hooker, an exceptional children teacher at Graham Middle School (Alamance-Burlington Schools). Community Band to present free outdoor Mother’s Day concert at VGCC
The Vance-Granville Community Band will hold its fourth annual outdoor concert, as a special treat for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 13. The program will begin at 3 p.m. at the Gazebo on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the VGCC Civic Center. Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of Vance-Granville Community College, was the guest of honor at a reception on April 16 in the college’s Civic Center that served as an opportunity to officially welcome her to the community. VGCC volunteers contribute to success of UNC-TV fundraiser
Vance-Granville Community College recently sent a group of 36 volunteers to Research Triangle Park to continue the college’s tradition of helping UNC-TV with the public broadcasting network’s on-air “Festival 2012” fundraiser. This was the eighth consecutive year that the college participated in the Festival, and the volunteer group was among VGCC’s largest ever.
