NC Community Band Festival Brings Musicians to VGCC
Musicians from around the state converged at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center on March 31, when the college hosted the third annual North Carolina Community Band Festival. During the day, members of three bands — the Vance-Granville Community Band, the Greensboro Concert Band and the Durham Community Concert Band — practiced with professional musicians and guest clinician Verena Moesenbichler-Bryant. VGCC Male Mentoring Students Elect Leaders
Students in the Male Mentoring Program at Vance-Granville Community College elected officers to serve during the academic year and represent their group at special events. Officers include president Curtis Jefferys of Henderson, vice president Rudy Renteria of Henderson, secretary Grey Winn of Youngsville, treasurer Kevin Benitez of Louisburg, and community liaison Jerome Bulluck of Henderson. Earth Day celebration to be held at VGCC on April 23
Vance-Granville Community College will hold its seventh annual Earth Day festival on Monday, April 23 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The public is invited. The event has been organized to educate the college and community about conservation and the natural world in a fun, informative setting. VGCC Cosmetology Students test skills in Competition
The annual Vance-Granville Community College Cosmetology competition was held on April 2 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. This year, student stylists picked one of two categories in which to demonstrate their skills and creative flair: “Fantasy,” and “Elegant Updo,” in which students worked on the heads of mannequins, rather than on live models. Vance County Schools – SVHS Finish in Math Contest
The Southern Vance High School Mathematics Team competed in the 26th N.C. Regional Mathematics Contest on March 30 at Chowan University with two students placing in the top four in individual competitions. Ebony Smith finished in a tie for fourth place in the Comprehensive Division. Justin Williford finished fourth overall in the Algebra II Competition, just one point out of a tie for second place. VGCC invites middle schoolers to Science Camp
Vance-Granville Community College held its first-ever Science Camp for middle school students in the summer of 2011, and the overwhelmingly positive response from campers and their parents has inspired college officials to hold a similar camp this year. The VGCC Science Camp will be held June 18-22 on the college’s Main Campus in Henderson. Young people preparing to enter grades six through eight are invited to participate in the week-long camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. …
VGCC invites Public to Reception honoring new President
The Board of Trustees of Vance-Granville Community College is inviting the community to a reception on Monday, April 16, in honor of Dr. Stelfanie Williams, who became the college’s sixth president in February. Finch retires as VGCC Small Business Center director
Diane P. Finch of Henderson recently retired as Director of the Small Business Center at Vance-Granville Community College. Members of Finch’s family joined her colleagues at a retirement reception held in her honor on March 22 at the college’s Main Campus. She had been the SBC director since January 1994, when she joined VGCC after serving as the executive director of the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce. Eaton-Johnson Middle School students visit VGCC Culinary program
Eighth-grade students in the ambassador program at Eaton-Johnson Middle School in Henderson and their parents recently enjoyed a visit to the Vance-Granville Community College Culinary Arts department, which is located at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford. Ambassadors are outstanding EJMS students who welcome visitors and dignitaries at special events and complete community service projects. They are selected based on their good character and behavior. VGCC Board Holds Meeting, Accepts $25,000 Grant
The Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, March 19 at the college’s Henderson campus. At that meeting, North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission board member Pete Burgess of Henderson presented the college with a symbolic check for $25,000 representing the recent Project Skill-UP grant awarded to VGCC. VGCC honors students collect books for Franklin Campus Day Care
The Vance-Granville Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently conducted a children’s book drive to support the Child Care Center at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus. The day care’s facilities and materials suffered major water damage late last year, ruining some of the center’s supplies, particularly books. In response, students in the Alpha Sigma Chi chapter of PTK, the international honor society for two-year colleges, collected approximately 135 new and gently-used books to replenish the supplies for the preschoolers’ use. …

Vance County Schools – Beef In Schools Contain No Ammonium Hydroxide
With recent reports of consumer concerns over ammonium hydroxide used to process lean finely textured beef, referred to as “pink slime,” Vance County Schools wants parents, students and the local community to know that the school system does not purchase beef products processed with this chemical. Vance County Schools has been ordering fully cooked commercial beef products, mostly in beef patties, since at least the year 2000. Vance-Granville Community College has named student Sharon M. Lark of Bunn as its recipient of the North Carolina Community College System’s Academic Excellence Award for 2012. New VGCC scholarship honors Maria Parham Guild Gift Gallery volunteers
The volunteers who operate the Guild Gift Gallery at Maria Parham Medical Center recently endowed their fifth Vance-Granville Community College scholarship, and this one specifically honors the service of all those who have donated their time to work at the gift shop over the years. The new gift continues a tradition of the organization’s support for education.
