Vance County Schools Student Accepted to 2012 Governors School
Ethan M. Byrom has been accepted to the 2012 Governors School in recognition of Mathematics. This summer, 550 of the most distinguished North Carolina rising high school juniors and seniors will attend the 2012 Governor’s School. This year’s attendees are particularly fortunate as the program’s future was in question after Governor’s School funding was eliminated in the NC General Assembly’s 2011-13 biennial budget. VGCC Nominates Student for Statewide Award
Vance-Granville Community College recently nominated Adriele Andre of Creedmoor, a student in the college’s Early Childhood Associate program, for the North Carolina Community College System’s Dallas Herring Achievement Award. That award was established by the system in 2010 to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, the longtime State Board of Education chairman and one of the state’s earliest advocates of community colleges. VGCC names six Early College students to Dean’s List
Vance-Granville Community College recently announced that six students who are enrolled in Early College High School programs earned Dean’s List honors for the fall semester that ended in December 2011. To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student had to maintain a 3.5 grade-point average and have no grade lower than “B” while carrying at least 12 semester hours. The Male Mentoring Program at Vance-Granville Community College will welcome a noted author, entrepreneur, social activist and educator to campus, where he will share his inspirational story. Grant from GlaxoSmithKline Supports STEM Education for NC Students
RALEIGH – North Carolina’s growing network of innovative STEM-focused schools is getting a boost from a three-year, $750,000 grant from GlaxoSmithKline. The funding from GSK will support the professional development of teachers and principals in the schools, which emphasize science, technology, engineering and math. Peter Metzner, a Psychology instructor at Vance-Granville Community College, will offer a free seminar about stress management, and the public is invited. Vance-Granville Community College is currently registering students for a Health Unit Coordinator course. The program is scheduled to be offered on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 until 4 p.m., April 23 through Aug. 20. Granville Early College High School reported zero dropouts in 2010-11
Granville Early College High School, which is operated as a partnership between Granville County Schools and Vance-Granville Community College, was recently cited for its success in dropout prevention in reports from the North Carolina State Board of Education and the N.C. New Schools Project. In fact, the new data showed that GECHS lost no students to dropping out during the 2010-2011 academic year. Vance-Granville Community College has been awarded a $25,000 Project Skill-UP grant from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.
