NCVPS Teacher Named National Online Teacher of the Year
North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) biology teacher Leslie Fetzer of Holly Springs has been named America’s 2012 “National Online Teacher of the Year” for K-12 education by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL). The 2012 SREB/iNACOL “National Online Teacher of the Year” award recognizes an outstanding online teacher for exceptional contributions to online K-12 education. Vance County Schools issue 2 hour delay for Monday
2 hour delays for all the following: Crossroads Christian School, Henderson Collegiate Charter School, Kerr-Vance Academy, Norlina Christian School, Vance Charter School, Vance County Schools, Vance-Granville Comm College, Victory Christian School Release from VCS: All Vance County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay on Monday, March 5, for all students and staff members due to the possibility of snowfall in the area in the early morning hours. ACT Testing in High Schools on Tuesday
On Tuesday, March 6, all 11th graders in high schools in Vance County Schools will be required to take the ACT college entrance exam. The test administration is required by the state this school year for the first time ever. The ACT is a curriculum and standards based educational and career planning tool that assesses students’ academic readiness for college. Fast Tracks Charter Schools Win “Race to the Top” Today
The State Board of Education today voted to grant new charters to nine North Carolina school applicants. These will be the first post-cap public charter schools to operate in the state. The first charters opened in 1997 and have been limited to 100 by law until Senate Bill 8 passed last summer. The process for eighth-grade students to apply to enroll in the Vance County Early College High School for the 2012-2013 school year is beginning with information sessions for parents and students at Eaton-Johnson Middle School on Tuesday, March 6, and at Henderson Middle School on Tuesday, March 13. Mobile Laboratory Coming To Vance County High Schools

Vance County Schools Opposes Privatization of NC Pre-K Program
The North Carolina State Board of Education has reported that there are recommendations in the N.C. General Assembly to eliminate participation of public schools in the N.C. PreK program (formerly More at Four program) and to reduce access of poor children to the program. The N.C. Department of Public Instruction Results from Pre-K Implementation Studies
The Department of Public Instruction Tuesday released the results of two studies that have found that pre-k programs implemented in public schools perform better than programs in private centers. These analyses of the More at Four program, now NC-PreK, were conducted by the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2009 and 2011. Number of North Carolina Children Living in High-Poverty Communities Surges
Raleigh, NC – The number of children living in high-poverty communities in North Carolina more than doubled over the past decade, according to a new KIDS COUNT Data Snapshot from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. One in 10 children in North Carolina now lives in high-poverty communities, up from 4 percent in 2000. In Vance County, 54% of children live in poverty.
