Statement on New Census Estimates of Poverty among American Children Raleigh, N.C. –A new report released by the U.S. Census Bureau Monday suggests more Americans are living in poverty than previously thought. The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), finds 49.1 million Americans (16%) now live in poverty, a slight increase from the 46.6 million (15%) thought to be poor under the traditional measure of poverty. Pinkston Street Elementary School Utilizies Donation For Science Kits
Principal Sherri Bowers of Pinkston Street Elementary School, is joined by several of her third-grade students in accepting a $1,500 check from George Fowler, executive director of the Vance County Public School Foundation, for the purchase of third-grade science kits. The kits will be used in all of the school’s third-grade classrooms for students to participate in hands-on science activities. Raleigh, N.C.-The 2011 Child Health Report Card, issued jointly by Action for Children North Carolina and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, finds infant mortality in North Carolina has dropped to 7 per 1,000 live births — an all-time low for the state. VGCC Advisory Committees Meet
Citizens from Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties came together at the main campus of Vance-Granville Community College on Oct. 25 as the college’s advisory committees held their annual meetings. Students in VGCC’s Culinary Arts program prepared hors d’oeuvres and desserts for a reception in the Civic Center, preceding the meetings. Corporal Punishment in the Public Schools: A Practice on the Decline
Legislation passed during the 2011 session of the North Carolina General Assembly requires school districts that have not yet banned corporal punishment to send a form to all parents at the beginning of the school year allowing them to opt their children out of corporal punishment. The new law expands legislation passed in 2010 that allowed parents of children with disabilities to opt out of corporal punishment.
