Susan Hughes, a fifth-grade teacher at Dabney Elementary School, has received a $750 grant from the N.C. Farm Bureau and the Vance County Farm Bureau. A total of $500 of the grant funding is from the state agency, with the remainder of the money from the county agency. Hughes will use the grant funds to purchase a HydroStacker Vertical Hydroponic Growing System for the use of her students and other students at the school. Vance-Granville Community College hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive on its Main Campus in Vance County on May 28. Farmers Market Opens in Henderson!

Nine of the sixteen marketplace spots were filling up with merchandise from Vance, Warren, and Granville counties. The offerings ranged from home-made lye soap to fresh eggs. Vance County Board of Commissioners Revised Meeting Schedule on Budget and Called Meeting
Chairperson Brown has agreed to combine Thursday evening’s budget work session and Friday’s called meeting into one meeting on Friday, June 13. There will not be a budget session Thursday (June 12th 2014) evening. Consistent with the public notice sent out earlier today, the Board of Commissioners’ meeting will still be at 12:00 noon June 13th, 2014. At the conclusion of that official meeting, the Board will take a lunch break and then will continue its work on the budget.

An innovative approach recently helped 18 certified law enforcement officers to complete a two-year degree in Criminal Justice Technology in little more than one year. Vance-Granville Community College offered a Criminal Justice “Cohort” program from April 2013 through May 2014. The program was designed with a specific type of student in mind: one who had already completed the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program and was employed by a law enforcement agency. Vance-Granville Community College is introducing a new Medical Coding curriculum certificate program this fall. The program will be scheduled in a uniquely accelerated fashion that allows students to complete the 17-credit-hour certificate over two semesters (August 2014 to May 2015).
