The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is once again offering high school students and teachers an opportunity to study at the renowned Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee this summer. Vance County Schools will continue to be closed for all students and school system employees on Wednesday, January 11 2017. With the extremely cold temperatures, roads in several areas across the county are still too icy for safe travel.
Vance County Schools Closed Tuesday
All Vance County Schools will be closed again for all students and school system employees on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, due to continuing snowy conditions that make travel risky. The make-up days for the two school days missed are already scheduled in our school year calendar for February 15 and June 9.

The City of Henderson’s City Council meeting for Monday 1/9/17 has been cancelled. A date has not yet been set for a replacement meeting. The Vance County Board of Commissioners meeting for Monday 1/9/17 has been cancelled. The new date has been scheduled for Wednesday January 11th at 6pm. VGCC graduates 14 cadets in school’s 103rd BLET Class
Fourteen cadets graduated on Dec. 13 from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program at Vance-Granville Community College, in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. Big Progress on Major Projects Highlight 2016 in the Triangle and Points North
Three of the state’s biggest highway projects this year are in the Triangle area and north near the Virginia border, and each are prime examples of the goals Governor Pat McCrory outlined in his 25-Year Vision for transportation. Vance-Granville Community College hosted admissions officers from four-year colleges and universities on Dec. 8 on VGCC’s Main Campus. Vance County Arts Council, led by Alice Sallins, held their original holiday musical and play on November 26th, 2016 in Downtown Henderson, NC at McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center. VGCC Bioprocess program moving to Franklin Campus
The Vance-Granville Community College Bioprocess Technology degree program will be based at the college’s Franklin County Campus, starting in January 2017. The program has been located at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County since its inception in January 2006. The biotechnology lab on Main Campus will now be used primarily by the new Histotechnology degree program instead. The Franklin Campus, located on N.C. 56 just outside of Louisburg, has actually had a biotech lab longer than the Main Campus …

Three national organizations recently recognized Vance-Granville Community College with high rankings for high-quality, affordable education, offered online or on-campus. The Community for Accredited Online Schools (AccreditedSchoolsOnline.org), a leading resource for higher education and college accreditation information, recently released its national rankings for the 2016-2017 school year. High school students throughout the region can now register for spring semester classes at Vance-Granville Community College offered through the “Career and College Promise” (CCP) program. The STEM Early High School in Vance County Schools hosted its second annual Spanish Spelling Bee on November 9, with a student from Henderson Middle School taking top honors. N.C. Industrial Hemp Commission begins work
The N.C. Industrial Hemp Commission recently held its first meeting, officially beginning work to establish rules governing a pilot program for industrial hemp production in North Carolina. The commission’s first order of business was to elect Dr. Tom Melton, of N.C. State University as its chairman. Melton is deputy director of N.C. Cooperative Extension and leader of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Program.
