Study shows VGCC education pays off for students and for local economy
Vance-Granville Community College students see a healthy return on their investment in education, and the region benefits from the education provided by the college to the tune of $271.3 million per year. Those are among the key findings of a new report by Idaho-based Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. (EMSI) on VGCC’s contributions to individual students, taxpayers and the regional economy. The Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, March 18 at the college’s Henderson campus. At that meeting, upon recommendation by the Budget Committee, the Board voted to adopt the 2013-2014 County Current and Capital Outlay Budgets as presented, contingent upon approval by appropriate county commissioners in the four-county area. Vance-Granville Community College recently nominated Rebecca Fetterhoff of Creedmoor, a student in the college’s Early Childhood Associate program, for the North Carolina Community College System’s Dallas Herring Achievement Award. VGCC invites middle schoolers to Science Camp
Vance-Granville Community College will hold its third annual Science Camp for middle school students this summer. The Science Camp will be held June 17-21 on the college’s Main Campus in Henderson. Young people preparing to enter grades six through eight are invited to participate in the week-long camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Animal Welfare Section reimburses counties more than $550,000 for low-cost spay/neuter procedures
RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Animal Welfare Section reimbursed counties more than half a million dollars for spay/neuter procedures for pets belonging to low-income residents in 2012. Overall, 28 counties requested nearly $562,500 in reimbursements for 9,529 surgeries performed. The Animal Welfare Section was able to reimburse $550,235. “The reimbursements are partially funded by fees collected from the Animal Lovers specialty license plate,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, whose retriever, Kate, is fixed. “Fixing cats …

VGCC volunteers contribute to success of UNC-TV fundraiser
Vance-Granville Community College recently sent a group of 35 volunteers to Research Triangle Park to continue the college’s tradition of helping UNC-TV with the public broadcasting network’s on-air “Festival 2013” fundraiser. This was the ninth consecutive year that the college participated in the Festival. Students, faculty and staff members traveled to the UNC-TV studio on March 2. Six NC stores fined for price-scanning errors
RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division has collected fines from stores in Charlotte, Delco, Elkin, Smithfield, Vanceboro and Winston-Salem for excessive price-scanning errors. The NCDA&CS Standards Division conducts periodic, unannounced inspections of a business’ price-scanner system to check for accuracy between the prices advertised and the prices that ring up at the register. RALEIGH — The N.C. Pesticide Board recently approved the following settlement agreements for respondents in Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Craven, Edgecombe, Nash, Northampton, Onslow, Pitt, Robeson, Stanly, Wake and Wayne counties. Keith Lee Adcox of Lumberton agreed to pay $1,000 for applying herbicides Gramoxone Inteon and Envive in a manner inconsistent with the labeling to a wheat field in Lumberton. Vance County Schools Revisions to Student Assignment Policy
The Vance County Board of Education Monday night approved revisions to its Assignment of Students to Schools Policy stating that the board will no longer approve out-of-county requests for students to attend schools outside of Vance County.
