Vance-Granville Community College recently provided special math workshops for elementary school children involved in the local Boys & Girls Clubs organization. Jacquelin Heath, head of the college’s School-Age Education program, presented a series called “Math Manipulatives for Youth” in June and July at the Boys & Girls Club site in Louisburg. Charlotte’s center city to host state’s first bike-sharing program
People who want to ride a bike in Charlotte will soon be able to rent a cycle from one of 20 stations in and around uptown. Charlotte Center City Partners was expected to formally unveil Charlotte B-Cycle, which they say is the state’s first bike-sharing program, at an event last Thursday. The first stations have been installed uptown at Trade and Tryon streets and outside 7th Street Public Market. The effort will formally debut in late July or early August. …

Vance County Schools – Scholarship Funding for Graduates
Members of the Class of 2012 at Southern Vance and Northern Vance high schools earned a total of almost $2 million in scholarship funding to further their education at the college level. Of the 176 graduates of Southern Vance, 46 earned scholarships totaling $1,396,400. Among the 193 graduates from Northern Vance, there were 35 students earning a total of $386,660 in scholarship funding for college. Vance County Crime Rates Improve, Still Highest in State
Thursday the North Carolina Department of Justice released the 2011 crime rate reports for North Carolina. Overall, reports of crime statewide fell by 0.9 percent in 2011, making it North Carolina’s lowest crime rate since 1977, Attorney General Roy Cooper said. The statewide violent crime rate dropped by 5.2 percent during the year.
