Is there a contradiction in the Vance County Board of Commissioners’ eagerness to help Deryl von Williams outfit a facility for her Vance County Learning Center while at the same time working to delimit the Vance County Board of Education’s building requests? Puzzle it out for us on today’s open line.

Let us put aside our differences on this most American of holidays and be grateful for all of the good things we have.
To the editor: the Pinocchio syndrome
Embassy Square Chair, Sam Watkins, says “Our past economic prosperity was curing tobacco. We now must provide our people exposure to opportunities where they can cure disease, cure racial disparity, and cure economic divisions. We’re talking about the expansion and development of our human infrastructure for the future prosperity of our region. Literal grass roots economic development through a neighborhood facility like no other (sic).”

Friday’s open line
The Daily Dispatch reported yesterday that Vance County Schools must “return” over $300,000 in state funds to North Carolina. We see this as a manifestation of a political syndrome: everyone is for better schools until the polls close.

Thunderstorms? In November? It’s a world gone mad on our weekend open line.

Opinion: Something to think about
We’ve lost count of how many comment posts have been deleted because of overtly racist language and messages since Sen. Barack Obama was declared the winner of the presidential election on Tuesday.
Election Day open line
We here at Home in Henderson hope that no matter what the outcomes of the various elections that we can be one community within one nation. It beats the crap out of being part of a team of slaves under one whip, like so many people are in the world today.
Halloween open line
Do we even need Halloween this year? John McCain and Barack Obama supporters are doing their best to scare the slop out of each other already. Well, the kids still enjoy it, anyway.

We tried a real name-only Home in Henderson site about a year ago. I stopped posting stories to it in July because only one dedicated soul was making comments on it. I haven’t taken it down yet because I don’t have the heart. I worked hard on it. As much as the virtuous tout a non-anonymous (nonymous?) blog, the reality is that the vast majority of Hendersonians and residents of Vance County (and others from far and wide, believe it …

Here’s a quote sent to us from our old friend Julian Oliver under the heading “Some things never change”: The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. Cicero, 55 BC We feel so much better about the future now. The fall of Rome was a million laughs.

As the editor of Home in Henderson, I get a fair share of telephone calls and emails that can safely be called “spin control” on various issues, usually local. As we move into the final phase of the presidential election, however, instead of the usual emails, I’ve been getting links to YouTube videos that endorse/detract both candidates. I shudder to think how many political opinions are being formed by two minute videos.
Tuesday’s open line
We congratulate City Manager Ray Griffin for a relatively smooth and efficient meeting of the Henderson City Council. May the wind always be at your back. Here’s your open line.
To the editor: Watch your step!

Friday/weekend open line
Although this may seem self-serving (like we’re trying to get in good with the wife), let us take this opportunity to appreciate the fact that we don’t ever have to do some of the jobs that law enforcement officers do every day. It’s an ugly world out there. Shabbat shalom!
