Lately the idea of donations to Home in Henderson has been mentioned on the blog.

To the editor: Clarification needed
The letter to the editor that appeared in Sunday’s edition of the Daily Dispatch by Mr. Burnette lacks accuracy and needs clarification.
Monday’s open line
This morning brings us once again to the Maria Parham Medical Center where, if all goes as planned, Mrs. Editor will leave sometime this afternoon minus a minor organ that has been troubling her now (as well as the rest of us) for some time. In the mean time, we commend The Daily Dispatch on yesterday’s op/ed piece regarding public records. If you haven’t read it, it’s definitely worth a look. Officials running background checks on citizens requesting public information? …
To the editor: Time to help male youth
In response to the growing crime among the youth in Henderson, my friend and coworker showed me this letter he has planned to send to our local newspaper editor.
To the editor: Rec Dept. complaints not answered
Dear Editor, I would be interested to see the number of residents in or out of Vance County who have made complaints against the Henderson Department of Recreation.
Tuesday’s open line
Perhaps every teacher in Vance County should take advantage of the Five County Mental Health Authority‘s stress management program. With nine school weeks left until EOG testing, and with so many students more interested in exploring behavior boundaries than learning anything, we’re still amazed that the expression for snapping one’s cap is still “going postal” rather than “going schoolteacher”. Send us some positive energy on today’s open line.
Monday’s open line
If it bleeds, it leads, they say in news business, but nothing gives us greater pleasure than reporting on events like Read Across America held this past Friday at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library. We cannot help but notice that comment posts are more numerous and more energetic when the topic is negative, however. We suspect that if some Hendersonians could generate the energy for community activism that they seem to reserve for ire that our town would be …
Friday’s open line
Although details are still emerging, it looks as if Vance County won’t get the new elementary school and/or middle school that seemed like a done deal just a few months ago. According to a key source, a vital piece of property on the proposed site was sold to a third party yesterday, rendering the investments already made in the remainder of the property, like site studies and architectural preliminaries worthless. We’re told that the Vance County government failed to respond …
Opinion: complacency bad for the Republic
For those of you who have not read Mr. Lewis Edwards’ excellent Letter to the Editor in Sunday’s Daily Dispatch, we strongly recommend it. It’s worth a look.

To the editor: How Durham County collects taxes
Editor, With so much attention being given to tax scofflaws and poor collection rates by Vance County, I thought HIH readers might like to take a look at what Durham County is doing.
To the editor: Worried about schools and ADHD meds
Dear Editor, I’ve been concerned about an issue that affects more here in Vance County than I first realized.
Time for Congress to balance the books

Today is the second anniversary of Home in Henderson. Happy Birthday to us!
Weekend open line
The Daily Dispatch reports that the City’s Land Planning Development Committee is going to give it one more go with the County in a face-to-face to resolve the impasse over the Armory/Rose Avenue Library building issue. Oddly enough, I am currently teaching my 5th graders the term compromise: when one party gives something up to get something in return. Can the City and the County reach this state? Voice your opinion here on our weekend open line.
To the editor: Taxation and representation
Dear Readers, I just wanted to get the opinion of the people on an idea I once heard.
Political analysis: Loyalty counts
Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted to us from the webzine The Political Junkies. The publisher, Stephen T. Gheen, was of the opinion that it would be of interest to our readers, and we agree. Rep. Joe Hackney of Orange County will be the next Speaker of the NC House of Representatives. He is progressive, experienced, talented and effective.
