I have a niece at Southern Vance High School who has called me and informed me of more problems with the administration at this school than I have EVER imagined.

We commend County Commissioner Danny Wright for his vote yesterday to give a home to the Boys and Girls Club of North Central North Carolina, Vance County Unit. We ask the others on the Commission to look into their hearts and ask themselves what is best for our children. We find that rarely are the needs of underprivileged youth served by a fat bottom line. We urge the Commission to follow the lead of the City Council and invest in …
Monday’s open line
This is one of those “eclipse days” when the Henderson City Council, the Vance County Commission, and the Vance County Board of Education meet on the same day. It seems to us that in a climate of greater civic interest, these major local governmental bodies would be required to meet on different days. This would allow concerned citizens an opportunity to attend all meetings, and elected officials would have a chance to attend the meetings of the other two bodies. …

We just got back from yet another trip to the emergency room, this time for one of the Little Editors. She’s fine, thank you for asking, but we are suffering from a whole lot of sleep deprivation.
To the editor: Curfew fines must go to schools
In the 12-7-06 local paper, the Curfew Committee was reported as discussing that offenders will pay fines for violations.

On this, Pearl Harbor Day, we remember all of the citizen-soldiers who gave life and limb to free the world from the tyranny of militarism and Fascism. May our country always be such a beacon of light to all the nations of the Earth. With that, we give you our open line.

We don’t often state an opinion, but this needs to be said: If readers find the racially-charged rhetoric on this blog distasteful (a position with which the Editor has more than a little sympathy), then we offer this one simple suggestion: change the nature of the discourse. It’s time to move on. If you believe that HiH is a poor ambassador of Henderson-Vance, remember that it does not create reader comments. You do that. We merely provide a forum, just …

For the past 48 hours, readers have voiced opinions for and against Sheriff-Elect Peter White’s decision to dismiss four deputies upon his assumption of the duties of Sheriff of Vance County today at 5:00 p.m. To say that this issue is divisive is to understate the obvious. When that division is played out on Home in Henderson invites the old argument that the blog is bad for the community because is presents a fractured and disunited face (although perhaps a …
Thanksgiving open line
On this most American of holidays, let us pause for a moment in gratitude and thank Providence for all that we have. Let us not forget our ancestors who built this nation and fought to protect it. Most of all, let us remember our youngest and bravest who are so far away from home, especially today.
Weekend open line
Today is not a day for politics, but rather a day to pay our respects to that most noble of American institutions — the citizen-soldier. As we go about our day today, let us remember that the edifice of our democracy rests upon the shoulders of the men and women who would risk their very lives to defend it.
To the editor: Veteran’s Day 2006
Copper Rain’s son, with fellow soldiers, in Iraq This is the day to honor our warriors.
To the editor: Stop “Rush” for county-wide zoning
The Countywide Zoning effort in Vance County has attracted a new level of absurdity from proponents — and a higher level at that.
To the editor: Unfair tax system
This letter is for the purpose of informing all citizens of the City of Henderson of the unfair tax system which has burdened us for many years.
Letter to the editor: Plain truth on zoning
From time to time, it’s good to take a long, hard look at what is put in the official scorebook.

When I was a teaching assistant at Penn State, the unwritten standard to which we were held when we accounted for the grading of our classes was a seven percent failure rate — no more, no less. This was indicative to our supervising professors of an acceptable level of difficulty. As we approach a standard of 80% passing on the EOG’s and EOC’s, with a 100% passing rate required by the year 2014 under the so-called “No Child Left Behind” …

Many posts under the article Gun, knife, found at Dabney Elementary” yesterday assigned blame, called for punishment of the children and/or parents, and spoke of how to better police the schools, but very few thought to look at why the child brought the firearm to school in the first place.
To the editor: A challenge to the establishment
Dear Editor, I have viewed the HiH web site many times and am impressed with the flow of information and the comments made by its posters.
Protecting children should be second to none
A Guest Column by U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge Over the past month, Americans witnessed a shocking wave of deadly school shootings across the nation.
To the editor: A challenge to readers
Dear Editor, I would like to pose a challenge to the readers of Home in Henderson who do not wish for Peter White to be our next sheriff in Vance County.

The Clean-Up Henderson Committee will meet at the City Operations Center Conference Room at 8:00 a.m. With over 170 vacant and dilapidated structures in the city alone, we’re amazing that more residents don’t show up to see this committee at work. When it comes to maintaining and increasing property values, surely Hendersonians can find a common ground. The only important color, after all, is green. Add your own two cents on today’s open line.
