City’s Public Safety Committee to meet Oct. 19
The Henderson City Council’s Public Safety Committee will meet on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 134 Rose Avenue, in Henderson, North Carolina. The purpose of the meeting is to continue discussions on the graffiti ordinance and the animal control ordinance. The meeting is open to the public.
Thursday’s open line
The Littlest Editor and I both got the flu vaccine on Tuesday, and at time of posting we both feel terrible. I don’t remember feeling the same way last year, and I got the H1N1 and pneumonia vaccine on top of it. Has anyone else noticed the same thing? Let us know on today’s open line.

It’s amazing how every two years everyone with a campaign committee, an interested reporter, or a television camera in their face suddenly becomes fascinated with the idea of improving education. Like a harvest moon, it waxes at summer’s end and wains in the early autumn evening of the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, not to be spoken of again for another twenty-two months. After a surprisingly large number of years, the Littlest Editor has finally discovered the word “ain’t” and has been sprinkling it into his conversations liberally. I’ve been correcting him, and he’s been accepting the corrections — for now. I’m wondering when he’ll mount the “It’s in the dictionary!” defense that got me exactly nowhere with Charles Dickens-reading grammarian of a mother when I tried to start saying “ain’t” at home. As it turns out, dictionaries list slang too. It’s nice …
