Tuesday’s open line
I was excused from a jury yesterday, but I’m not off the hook yet. I have to call today to see if they’ll need [to reject] me tomorrow. We were unable to cover or provide video for yesterday’s Henderson City Council work session. Apologies are offered to those who feel that they deserve apologies. Safe Kids spaghetti fundraiser August 9
The Safe Kids Henderson-Vance Coalition is a non-profit organization that promotes the safety of kids by providing the tools and education necessary to teach our community the importance of child safety.
City public safety meeting July 27
The Henderson City Council’s Public Safety Committee will meet on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall, 134 Rose Avenue in Henderson, North Carolina. The committee is scheduled to discuss the graffiti ordinance, the curfew ordinance, the dog ordinance, and other business.

We read with interest the editorial in yesterday’s Daily Dispatch about Henderson’s two American Legion posts which are apparently defined by the ethnicity of their respective members. My grandfather belonged to an organization called Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America. I don’t think he belonged to it to disassociate himself from non-Jews, nor did he ever tell me that he had been turned away from any other organization of veterans. I think it was just his way …

** Corrected ** We heard that there was a public hearing scheduled for yesterday’s meeting of the Kittrell Town Council regarding extending zoning to a one-mile Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) around the town. We were unable to cover the meeting, but we’re curious about whether the vote took place and what the result was. Let us know what happened on today’s open line.

FAITH fund raiser July 16
The pet rescue organization For Animals In Trouble, there’s Hope (FAITH) will be holding a spaghetti plate fund raiser on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Special county commission meeting July 15
The Vance County Board of Commissioners will meet in a special called meeting on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Conference Room, Vance County Administration Building, 122 Young Street in Henderson, North Carolina. The purpose of the meeting is to address matters involving the Neighborhood Stabilization Program and other items as needed.
