Beginning yesterday, it is illegal to sell or give away novelty lighters in North Carolina. Novelty lighters are defined as looking like toys, cartoon or other characters, pens, and other objects not normally associated with lighters. Fire investigators have stated that children mistake them for toys and start fires. Violating the law will cost $500. For more information, visit www.ncdoi.com/osfm/FireSafetyPrograms/NL_home.asp.
