Some people have expressed interest in a Home in Henderson Sports Section. We fully support the idea. Send your submissions to homeinhenderson@nc.rr.com and we’ll go from there. This being a local interest site, we’d prefer local sports of any variety or age group, along with photos, and we’d also like for people to write under their real names as well. We thank those of you who are interested and look forward to hearing from you soon. In the mean time, …

Well, the Henderson City Council took the bait last night and opted to voice it’s opinion regarding the naming of the Western Outer Loop. In a unanimous vote (with council member Bernard Alston absent from last night’s meeting), the members opted for Option B, which entails naming the section of the Loop from Graham Avenue to Old Oxford Road after Tiny Broadwick, and the segment from Old Oxford Road to Old County Home Road after Martin Luther King. Enjoy.
Muscle cars rule downtown
Here are some pics by our own Copper Rain of the festivities this weekend during the annual Show, Shine, Shag, & Dine car event sponsored by Vance County Tourism under the able direction of Nancy Wilson.

Here’s a copy of the correspondence from the County to the City regarding the naming of the Western Outer Loop. Is this a process in which the City really wants to become involved? Let your opinion be known on this or anything else on this week’s first open line.

Corner Kitchen: Captivating with casseroles
My daughter is deeply into a cooking phase, and her mother and I are looking to keep her engaged in this as long as possible. Please help us out by posting some casserole recipes (which seem to be her favorite to prepare) so that we can assure her that her piécè de résistance is the next recipe away for as long as possible.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our readers as well as our colleagues at E.M. Rollins Elementary School for your get-well notes. The road to recovery has a lower speed limit than we’d like, but the destination is in sight. We hope to be back in fighting trim soon. In the mean time, don’t forget that today marks the beginning of Vance County Tourism’s Show, Shine, Shag, & Dine car event which will run downtown through the 22nd. …

This from a frequent contributor: Walt Disney was quoted as saying, “A dream is a wish the heart makes.” He went on to create a reality that never before existed. What are your dreams? How can you make them come true? Do you believe in the power of “mind over matter”?

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Maria-Parham Emergency Room nursing staff, the respiratory therapist, the radiologists, and Dr. Joe himself for all of the excellent care I received on Saturday night/Sunday morning. I wish I could remember everyone’s name, but I was a whole lot sicker than I thought I was, and probably still am. As much as we like to poo-poo the local hospital, it’s been there for all of us, at one time or another, …

With the big dog skulking around the pen, now’s your chance to sneak one by in the form of a letter to the editor, guest column, or open line idea. Opportunities like this don’t come every day, thank goodness. Enjoy in good health.

Sorry I’ve been away, but I spent the first five hours of Sunday in the hospital for acute bronchitis. It’s been no fun at all. They would have admitted me, but all of the beds in the hospital were full. Who said they didn’t need the new tower? This space is yours. Enjoy. I’m going back to the doctor.

We’re fascinated by the argument that Vance County Commissioners Tim Pegram and Terry Garrison put forward yesterday that Henderson city residents must assume a greater tax burden because the city charter and city residence are entered into voluntarily. Many cities around the country understand that the services they provide support employment, and they impose a tax on suburbanites who commute into the city to work in order to support those municipal services. Should Henderson consider such a tax to support …
Corner Kitchen: “…a hill of beans…”
Lentil soup, split pea soup, black-eyed pea soup… These are some of the many memories of our childhood that we are trying to put behind us. What kind of attractive, palatable preparation for beans do you use to keep the family from open rebellion? Share your secrets on this week’s Corner Kitchen.
