Not far from where I grew up is the unincorporated Town of Motels, Breezewood, Pennsylvania, at the confluence of Interstate 70 and Interstate 76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike). This is a county with a population like that of Vance which has pretty much made a large chunk of its living since the 1950’s from that one man-made quirk of highway planning (and careful federal lobbying). We’ve got an intersection too, but we also have so much more. What untapped potential have …

Don’t forget tax-free weekend!
North Carolina’s fifth annual sales tax holiday is this weekend — 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6.
Wednesday’s open line
Today’s open line comes to us from a long-time reader: What will Henderson look like in ten years? What would you like Henderson to look like in ten years and how do we get there? Think good thoughts and let them be known here on today’s open line.
“Warriors Series”: Not your grandma’s cats
Editor’s note: Today we introduce an occasional series of reviews of children’s literature by Claire Ramsey, the Head of Youth Services at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library.

Now is your chance to let Henderson City Manager Jerry Moss and assorted council folk know what you think we need in a chief of police. Let your thoughts on this or any other topic be known on today’s open line.

Don’t forget to send your seething letter to the editor to letter-to-the-editor@homeinhenderson.com. Unlike some publications, we do not have a word limit; however, we do reserve the right to edit submissions for content. Do you have something for the open line? Send it to submission@homeinhenderson.com. Don’t expect us to do all the thinking around here! Until those submissions come pouring in, this space is yours. Enjoy.
Corner Kitchen: No-heat suppers
Even with central A/C, it’s still been too hot to cook, unless you like to see your major appliances fight duels to the death (usually of your pocketbook). If anyone has any no-heat recipes out there that rise beyond the level of the sandwich and salad, we’d love to see ’em.

Home in Henderson is working hard to get confirmation from Henderson Police Chief Glen Allen as to whether or not he’ll be folding up his tent and leaving our fair town. Until then, remember that any debate as to his successor, interim or otherwise, is purely speculative. We also heard that the pink slips started flying fast and furious at Maria Parham Medical Center yesterday. We will have more information on that tomorrow. There’s plenty to talk about. En garde…

Ethics is defined by answers.com as follows: The science of human duty; the body of rules of duty drawn from this science; a particular system of principles and rules concerting duty, whether true or false [emphasis mine]; rules of practice in respect to a single class of human actions; as, political or social ethics; medical ethics. Note that the words “good”, “bad”, “evil”, and other morally-charged terms are not used in the definition. Why? Because an ethics policy can only …

Clean-Up Henderson will be meeting at the City Operations Center at 8:00 this morning. Also, don’t forget the Farmer’s Market today at the YMCA parking lot on Ruin Creek Road. To paraphrase Aristotle, form is content. Does Henderson look better than it did ten years ago, and, if so, does that make Henderson a better place to live? Let your thoughts on this or anything else be known on today’s open line.

There will be a meeting at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall for Beacon Light residents to talk to HUD officials about relocation and other concerns. The city will be providing transportation for Beacon Light residents without means of their own to and from the meeting. We’re very interested in the discussion of what second language is best to study. As an educator, it is my belief (and there is some science to back this up) that the study of any …
Pick of the day: Being appreciated
From left to right, Henderson City Council member Lynn Harper and Henderson Mayor Clem Seifert present HUD-provided consultants Yolanda Porche and Dorothy Reiser Certificates of Appreciation for their work on the Mayor’s Task Force on Housing.

Forgive us if we’re stating the obvious, but what is the point of going through the time, trouble, and expense of hiring an attorney to get everything out into the open if he’s going to report in secret? If anyone would like to explain what we’re missing, our ears are open. Otherwise, this space is yours. Happy Monday.
Corner Kitchen: Tastes just like chicken
This week we have taken it upon ourselves to solicit recipes involving the ubiquitous bird in all forms. Frankly, we’re running out of ideas on how to cook it and serve it, and unlike good beef, it doesn’t cost $8 a pound; at least, not yet.

To continue this week’s unofficial theme, one thing that is demonstrated both by a survey of the history of American education and by frequent discussions here on Home in Henderson is that schools in America are more creatures of politics than anything else. Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980 with the dismantling of the newly-created Department of Education as part of his platform (created during the Carter administration), and a generation later fellow Republican George W. Bush expands that very …

The JCPC will meet today at 8:30 a.m. at the Aycock Recreation Center Conference Room. Also, the Vance County Coalition Against Crime will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Gateway Community Center. As many are already aware, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results were released by the NC Department of Public Instruction yesterday. Those results may be reviewed in detail here. An explanation of the meaning of AYP within the context of the “No Child Left Behind” law can be found …

Once again, there are no government meetings to spark discussion or the public fancy, so the topic is up to you. Have at.
Monday’s open line
There are no government meetings today of which we are aware. The Reverend C.J. Dale’s court date is today during the morning session of district court. We hope to let you know what happens. Until then, this space is yours. Enjoy.
