Seventy-nine percent (79.2 percent or 91,919 students) of North Carolina public school third grade students met the reading proficiency standards under North Carolina’s Read to Achieve program according to the Improve K-3 Literacy Accountability Measures Comprehensive Plan for Reading Achievement report. Search Warrant Yields Drug Arrest
On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, members of the Henderson Police Department Special Operations Unit executed a search warrant at 1215 Topleman Street in Henderson. During the search, officers recovered 170 grams of marijuana, 23.1 grams of cocaine, 56 grams of crack cocaine, AK-47 rifle and items of drug paraphernalia. Attorney General Roy Cooper: Beware Subscription Renewal Offers from Third Parties
Consumers regularly get messages urging them to renew a magazine or newspaper subscription. But those messages aren’t always sent by the publisher. For example, some subscribers to the Raleigh News and Observer recently received renewal notices from an “independent subscription agent.” Some of the prices to renew listed in the notices were much higher than those offered by the newspaper. The two companies mentioned in the letters, United Publishers Exchange and Associated Publishers Network, have histories of questionable business practices. …

Series of I-440 Ramp Closures at Poole Road for Fortify Project Continues This Weekend
RALEIGH – Work on the Poole Road exit of I-440 for the Fortify project will require another ramp closure this weekend. On Friday, Oct. 3, crews will begin closing the ramp from Poole Road onto I-440 West. The ramp will be re-opened by 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, weather permitting. RALEIGH — The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles today announced the immediate closing of its Henderson License Plate Agency (LPA) in Vance County due to violations of state criminal laws. Located at 946-D West Andrews Avenue, this LPA was closed following an internal investigation of the office’s operations. The Division’s investigation determined inappropriate activities, including accounting irregularities, warranted the closure of the office and termination of its contract.
